Toke Makinwa (born 3 November 1984) is a Nigerian radio personality, television host, vlogger, lifestyle entrepreneur[4] and author.[5][6][7][8] She is known for her book, On Becoming[9], hosting The Morning Drive on Rhythm 93.7 FM and her YouTube vlog series Toke Moments.[10]

Early life and education

Makinwa was born on 3 November 1984 in Lagos state. She went to high school in Federal Government Girls' College Oyo, Oyo State and graduated from the University of Lagos where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature.

Career

Radio

In 2010 Toke Makinwa made her major media debut on Rhythm 93.7 FM’s  The Morning Drive show as a co-host which served as her foundation and eventual catalyst.[11]

Television

In 2012, Toke made a major television appearance as host[12] of the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria (MBGN) beauty pageant which was broadcast live across Nigeria.[13] She later went on to score other television gigs kicking off with Flytime’s 3 Live Chicks[14] (along with Tosyn Bucknor and Oreka Godis) which debuted as a web series before expanding to terrestrial television in late 2012. Makinwa did not renew her contract with Flytime TV for the second season and was subsequently replaced by her radio colleague Omalicha.[15]


The year 2012 also saw her launch a still-running vlog series, Toke Moments[16] on YouTube. Through Toke Moments[17], she built a community and became a lifestyle influencer with her views on all things related to relationships, style and living.[18]


In January 2014, Hip Hop World Magazine announced Toke as the host[19] of its interview and talk series dubbed Trending[20]. She later passed the baton to a new host in 2015.[21] She also secured a spot on EbonyLife TV as a co-host of its flagship show dubbed Moments.[22]

Personal life

On 15 January 2014, married Maje Ayida, whom she had been involved with for eight years.[48][49] In 2015, she separated from her husband following a scandal revealing he had impregnated his ex-girlfriend.[50] On 5 October 2017, Makinwa's marriage to Ayida was dissolved by a Lagos High Court on the grounds that Ayida committed adultery.[51]
