Animal genetic resources are the existing pool of animal genes, whether living or cryopreserved. These genes are considered resources, because if they were to become extinct, we would have no easy way of creating that unique combination of genetic traits. The world has a rapidly changing climate and environment, and our food and livestock demands are constantly changing due to__. Thus, it is important to maintain a wide range of genetic material in order to better adapt and combat food scarcity in our changing environment. This is why the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the UN has created an action plan that includes strategies for sustainable management of genetic resources.[1]
