Mr. Game & Watch (Mr.ゲーム&ウォッチ, Misutā Gēmu ando Wotchi) is a fictional character in the Game & Watch series, a line of hand held static LCD video games.

Ball (Silver), 1980. The first appearance of Mr. Game & Watch.

History

Gunpei Yokoi (the creator of G&W) was on a bullet train. He saw a man playing with an LCD calculator by pressing the buttons. He soon thought of the idea of making little handheld consoles to kill time.

Concept and creation

Mr. Game & Watch is one of Nintendo's first video game creations (having premiered in April 28, 1980). Before the Game Boy or Famicom was introduced, the Game & Watch series appeared as individual timepieces. His appearance in Super Smash Bros. Melee finally yielded him his name, as prior to this he was an anonymous protagonist. In addition, and to the confusion of some, he (or perhaps a doppelgänger) can be found in many Wario games, including the new WarioWare, Inc. games. Mr. Game & Watch also manages the Present section of Game & Watch Gallery 4, together with Mario. He can talk in this game.

Appearance and Abilities

Mr. Game & Watch as he appears in Super Smash Bros. Melee

Mr. Game & Watch is normally a solid black color; his palette swaps are Red, Blue and Green.

Uniquely within the game, Mr. Game & Watch is a flat, two dimensional character. (The game engine simply flattens a 3D character model for the effect.) Graphically, Mr. Game & Watch moves in a frame-by-frame manner as opposed to the smooth motion of the other characters. As a result of the character being 2D he is very light and therefore prone to being knocked out of the stage easily. Mr. Game and Watch appeared in Wario Smooth Moves as a minigame.

Most of Mr. Game & Watch's attacks consist of hitting opponents with an item from a Game & Watch game such as bug spray, a scuba helmet or a turtle. The more unique attacks involve a hammer that has a 9 random effects, a frying pan that launches pieces of simmering sausages and a bucket that catches enemy projectiles and dumps the resulting oil as offense. Many of Mr. Game & Watch's animations are 2 simple frames. The damage Mr. Game & Watch does with all his moves (very noticable on his Air Forward + A) is dependent on the point at which the victim is hit by it. The character also makes beeping noises for everything he does, which the game treats as sound and not voice (most characters become mute when grabbing a Metal Box, but Mr. Game & Watch doesn't stop beeping).

In the competitive SSBM community, Mr. Game & Watch is not a very common character since effective use of him against a skilled opponent often requires complex mind games. Even at full size, his shield leaves parts of his hands and legs uncovered, and most of his moves are slow. However, he has good KO'ing power, and most of his moves have good priority and last a long time.

Flat Zone

Mr. Game & Watch also has an accompanying stage named "Flat Zone", a location in the larger "Superflat World", which looks like a Game & Watch Helmet system, although the name has been changed to say "Smash Bros.". It borrows scenarios from the Game & Watch models Manhole, Helmet and Oil Panic - tools such as buckets and wrenches will occasionally fall from the sky, platforms appear and disappear and slippery oil is sometimes spilled on the stage. And as the real system is, you can see everything's "outline" that is on the stage. Other obstacles reference Manhole and Oil Panic. Amusing easter eggs are that if you go into camera mode, you can see that in Flatzone, characters are 2D and if you listen closely the character's movements beep like Mr. Game & Watch. This is also visible while doing the multiple jumps as Kirby or Jigglypuff and when you do the Egg Roll move with Yoshi.
