Noted to be "Prince" of Saiyans, but in the 8th film he is decleared "King". Which makes more sense since his father is dead.

Character story
Personality
As the royal prince of the almost extinct Saiyan race, Vegeta is seen to be arrogant, rude, and sadistic, making his pride and power the most important things to him. Even though his strong sadistic nature relaxes when he marries and has children, his overwhelming pride never ceases even as he settles down into family life. Many early examples of his unintentional heroism were due to arrogance, his love of fighting, or his desire to prove himself better than Goku. In order to do so, Vegeta would fight enemies that were considered rivals to Goku as well as him. This soon develops into him fighting in order to protect his family and his home from enemies. By the end of Dragon Ball Z, he views Goku more as a close friend rather than a serious rival. This is most obvious in the last episode of Dragon Ball GT when he becomes incredibly angry when he believes Yi Xing Long has killed Goku.

Bardock special

Vegeta is seen in his youth in the Burdock movie special. Vegeta easily destroyed 5-6 Saibamen in this movie, showing his immense ability at a young age, being the son of the Saiyan king who was also named Vegeta. Even though Vegeta was royalty, he and his father were under the rule of the planetary overlord, Freeza. However, Freeza, out of fear of an impending uprising, kills King Vegeta and destroys Planet Vegeta, along with all Saiyans except for 4 (three additional Saiyans, Tullece, Paragus, and Broly, are added from the movies), Goku, Goku's older brother Raditz, Nappa and Vegeta himself. Freeza kept Vegeta, Raditz and Nappa as mercenary, usually to destroy planets and instill fear, much as he had used the Saiyan race. Meanwhile, unknown to Freeza, Goku had been sent to Earth to wipe out the humans and prepare it for sale. Because Vegeta is the son of King Vegeta, he prides himself as being the "Prince of all Saiyans".

Dragon Ball Z
<small>Saiyan Saga</small>

Vegeta is introduced to Dragon Ball Z as a reluctant and deceitful mercenary for Freeza. However, his true intentions for coming to Earth are to make a wish with the Dragon Balls for immortality, in hopes that he may eventually defeat Freeza and rule the Galaxy. When Vegeta and Nappa arrive on Earth, they are confronted by the Z Fighters. Vegeta lets Nappa fight alone, Nappa has no trouble disposing of most of them. When Goku finally arrived and saves the remaining Z Fighters, he easily defeats Nappa. Vegeta, out of anger, kills Nappa for losing to such a low class Saiyan. Vegeta begins his battle with Goku.
At first, Vegeta easily overpowers Goku. However after a battle with Vegeta being overpowered by Goku's Kaioken x4, Vegeta transforms into a Oozaru, crushing Goku. But after his tail was cut off by Yajirobe's katana, hit by a Genki Dama and crushed by Gohan in his Oozaru form. A severely wounded Vegeta tried to reach his space pod. The other fighters are unable to move except for Kuririn. He wanted to kill Vegeta with Yajirobe's katana, but Goku pleaded with Kuririn to spare Vegeta. Barely escapes with his life, Vegeta, within his space pod, takes off towards one of the planets controlled by Freeza to recover from his injuries. With his extreme arrogance, he cannot understand how he could have been defeated by such weak enemies.

<small>Freeza Saga</small>

After recovering from the wounds he received from the battle on Earth, Vegeta finds out that Freeza left for Planet Namek in search of the Namekian Dragon Balls. Vegeta makes his way to Planet Namek, planning to make a wish with the Namekian Dragon Balls. When he arrives, Vegeta finds that Freeza has already been searching for the Dragon Balls. Vegeta kills Freeza's minions Kiwi, Dodoria, and Freeza's right hand soldier, Zarbon. He also confronts Gohan and Kuririn, who had also come for the Dragon Balls so that their dead friends could be revived. The Dragon Balls are soon stolen by Freeza's elite mercenaries, the Ginyu Force who fought Vegeta, Kuririn, and Gohan after they had teamed with the purpose of fighting them. Vegeta is able to kill Gurd but is then defeated by Recoome. During Gohan's fight with Recoome, Goku arrives to help after healing from his injuries from his fight with Vegeta. After Goku defeated Recoome, Vegeta comes to believe that Goku may have become the new Saiyan of Legend.

After Goku defeated Butta, Vegeta stomped on Butta's neck, then finished off the wounded Recoome with a Ki blast thus killing them both. Goku, upset by Vegeta's actions, says that Recoome and Butta deserved the mercy that Vegeta received. During the battle with Captain Ginyu, Vegeta battles Jheese also killing him in the process. After the Ginyu Force is defeated, Goku was left badly injured, but Vegeta decided to help him recover, so he could help battle Freeza. Freeza showed up abruptly to stop Gohan and Kuririn from wishing on the Dragon Balls, something Vegeta was not aware of. Vegeta, Gohan, Kuririn, and the recently revived Piccolo begin a battle with Freeza, however Freeza was simply toying with the warriors. Freeza, then, decided to torture Vegeta to show him that he really wasn't the Super Saiyan as he had made himself to believe.
Freeza completely dominated Vegeta, but Goku arrived in time to save him. With tears in his eyes, he spent his last moments of life telling Goku about what really happened to Planet Vegeta, which Freeza was responsible for. In his last moment, Vegeta mocked Freeza, for he believed that Goku could beat the alien tyrant. Freeza finished him off with a single energy beam from his finger, killing the Saiyan prince. Vegeta was later revived by the Dragon Balls, and transported to Earth. He, later, left to train in hope of surpassing Goku who had reached Super Saiyan while fighting Freeza.

<small>Cell Saga</small>

After Freeza's defeat, Vegeta scours the galaxy in search of Goku. Unable to locate him, Vegeta returns to Earth. After an offer from Bulma for a place to stay, he lives with the Briefs family at Capsule Corp. Vegeta continues to train in hopes of defeating Goku upon his return. When sensing a huge ki heading towards Earth, Vegeta realizes that Goku had not kill Freeza. Freeza arrives on Earth with his father, King Cold, to exact revenge upon Goku, his family and friends. Suddenly a mysterious young Super Saiyan appears quickly disposes of Freeza and King Cold to Vegeta's disbelief. When Goku finally arrives on Earth, the young man tells him that he is from the future, and that two diabolical androids will arrive in three years and kill all the Z Fighters. After a quick display of their Super Saiyan abilities, Vegeta vows to become one himself. During the three years, Vegeta and Bulma have a child named Trunks and Vegeta becomes a Super Saiyan during this time period as well.
The Androids arrive three years later as predicted. When Goku failed to defeat Android 19 because of a heart illness, Vegeta, doning a new Saiyan outfit, defeats Android 19 revealing his Super Saiyan power to the other Z-Fighters. During Piccolo's fights the Android 20 (Dr. Gero), the young Super Saiyan reappears. Hearing Piccolo call the boy "Trunks", Vegeta realizes that the young man was his own son, from the future. It is also revealed that the androids the Z-Fighters confronted were not the ones that Trunks knew. Gero escaped to his hideout and released the androids Trunks was familiar with (#17, and #18), who in turn kill Gero and release Android 16. During his battle with the newly awakened Android 18, Vegeta is beaten serverly. After being outclassed, Vegeta vows to transcend the Super Saiyan. Goku, recovered from his illness, persuades Vegeta to enters the Room of Spirit and Time at Kami's Lookout and trains with Trunks for a lapsed time of one year. During that time, the bio-warrior android named Cell had started his search for Androids 17 and 18, in a goal to reach "perfection". He was successful in absorbing Android 17.
Vegeta and Trunks emerge from the Room of Spirit and Time, to confront Semi-Perfect Cell. After revealing his Ascended Super Saiyan form, Vegeta dominates Cell. Cell feeding of Vegeta's pride persuades Vegeta to allow him to absorb Android 18, in order to become complete, thus make the fight more interesting. Vegeta foolishly allows this. Cell absorbs 18, and Vegeta finds himself utterly outclassed once again. Trunks comes to his father's aid showing he has surpasses even his father's prided strength. It was revealed Trunks' power had limitations, sacrificing speed for power. Vegeta had seemingly understood this concept, where as Trunks had not. After the battle to which Cell wins, Cell decided to hold a tournament dubbed the Cell Games to fight the strongest warriors on Earth, main Son Goku. Vegeta in preperation for the tournament, reenters the Room of Spirit and Time a second time, however was unable to advance his powers after another lapsed time of one year.
Vegeta is an observer during the beginning bouts of the Cell Games. Vegeta does not get the opportunity to fight in the actual tournament until Cell creates his Cell Juniors. Because of Gohan's foolish mistake in not destroying Cell, Goku sacrifice himself for the fate of Earth. After Goku's sacrifice and Cell resurrection, Cell kills Trunks. Vegeta, out of rage of seeing his son die, goes into a berserk rage and attacks Cell. This being the first time Vegeta shows affection for another person. Cell defeats Vegeta but later Vegeta distracts Cell long enough for Super Saiyan 2 Gohan to push all his energy into his Kamehameha destroying Cell. Now with Goku's death, Vegeta felt that he would never have another chance to defeat Goku. With Cell defeated and Shenlong reviving the people killed by Cell, Trunks decides to return to his time. Vegeta in his own way acknowledges Trunks, his son as a worthy Saiyan warrior before Trunks returns to his time.

<small>Buu Saga</small>

Seven years pass since the Cell Games, and the Tenka’ichi Budôkai is reinstated. Now that Goku is gone, Vegeta's main focus is to make his own son stronger than Goku's now two sons. Upon hearing from Goku during Gohan's visit to Capsule Corp that he will be visiting Earth for strict 24 hour period to fight in the tournament. Vegeta sees this as the perfect opportunity for a rematch with Goku.
During the tournament, the active Z-Fighters are alerted to the presence of a grand evil and head off to vanquish it, enraging Vegeta who is again denied his rematch. During their confrontation with Babidi and his Majin warriors, Vegeta's dark intentions are observed by Dabura, the strongest minion under Babidi's command who abandons his fight with Gohan to inform his master. Able to manipulate and enslave those with evil in their hearts, Babidi attempts to mystically convert Vegeta into a Majin warrior. Though he struggles, Vegeta is consumed and becomes Majin Vegeta. Desperate to fight Goku, they are returned, by Babidi's magic, to the tournament arena where Vegeta begins murdering spectators to force Goku into a no-holds barred battle. However, refusing to allow more innocents to fall, Goku requests Babidi to allow their battle to take place in a remote, abandoned area.
There Vegeta is ordered to kill the East Kaioshin by Babidi but Vegeta refuses to the astonishment of Babidi as it is something that should be impossible. Clinging to his pride after being enslaved, Vegeta states that his only goal is to finally defeat Goku and nothing else will be allowed to interrupt or postpone their battle. During their conflict, they release enough energy to awaken Majin Buu which distracts Goku, requesting Vegeta to end their fight to deal with the threat. Vegeta accepts the truce only to knock Goku unconscious and setting off to deal with Majin Buu alone, wanting to repay Goku for sacrificing himself against Cell many years ago. Unfortunately Vegeta, despite possessing overwhelming power, cannot compete with Buu's near invulnerability and is bested, forcing him to commit suicide as a last resort, detonating every ounce of power and in the process sacrificing his life, even though he knew from Piccolo that he would go to hell.
Eventually, Vegeta is restored to life when the battle against Buu becomes increasingly desperate. Vegeta unwillingly forces himself to fuse with Goku to become Vegetto, easily out-classing Buu until Vegetto is willingly absorbed to free his friends trapped within the mystical monster. Within the bowels of Buu, Vegetto is separated into Goku and Vegeta. They engage in battles with the internal defenses of Buu before escaping and being transported to the planet of the Kais. There, Vegeta and Goku battle against Buu until Vegeta composes a plan, struggling to hold off Buu long enough for Goku to form and use the Genki Dama. During this time Vegeta asks Dende on New Namek to wish everyone on Earth back to life to give energy to the Genki Dama. Dende asks Porunga to wish everyone that was non-evil back to life and to his and Goku's surprise, Vegeta is restored back to life. Buu is defeated and Vegeta finally settles his rivalry with Goku, becoming a true good guy and Goku's friend in the process. Many years later, the heroes reunite at another Tenka’ichi Budôkai tournament where Vegeta prepares once again to face Goku in battle. Goku leaves however to train a powerful new fighter, Uub as Vegeta and the Z-fighters watch on.
In the new kanzenban version of the final volume, Vegeta once again swears to himself that he will become stronger than Goku and fight him again.

<small>Baby Saga</small>

Main article: Baby Saga
In this saga, Baby, an artificially-created Tsufurujin came to Earth. These people were the race that used to live on the Saiyan's homeworld before being wiped out by the stronger race. He possessed people, including Gohan and Goten, to find Vegeta. Vegeta fought both Goten and Gohan, and beat them, but Baby entered Vegeta's body through multiple cuts and proceeded to control him completely. thus becoming the insanely powerful Baby-Vegeta.
Having by now brought the entire world's population under his control, Baby-Vegeta is later on stunned to be encountered by Goku, who had recently returned to Earth. Baby-Vegeta then reveals that he has placed everyone on Earth under his control, not knowing that there are still four inhabitants who are not: Pan, Good Buu, Mr. Satan and Uub. It is revealed that Trunks did not, in fact, force Baby out. Baby explains that the incident was an act, so that he could place an egg within Trunks to overtake him later. Goku then challenges Baby-Vegeta to combat. It's an even match, but Baby-Vegeta gains the upper hand when Goku reverts back to normal and by having the hypnotized Saiyans lend him enough energy for him to transform into his final form. With his new power, Baby-Vegeta easily topples Goku, and fires a Revenge Death Ball at him. After the ensuing explosion, Goku is nowhere to be seen and presumed dead.
Baby-Vegeta then decides to carry out the final phase of his plan: that of using the Black Star Dragon Balls to wish for the return of the Tsufuru home planet, Planet Plant (now dubbed by Baby as "Planet Tsufuru"), and to move everyone on Earth to the new Planet Tsufuru via spaceships. But after seeing Pan, Buu and Hercule intervene, Baby-Vegeta orders Gohan and Videl to execute the young Saiyan. Fortunately, she is rescued at the last minute by Uub, Goku's prized student.
Uub and Baby-Vegeta then engage one another in mortal combat, and seem to be even. Gohan, Goten and Trunks come to Baby-Vegeta's aid, but Baby-Vegeta claims the he was merely playing with Uub, and blasts them aside for their lack of faith. Baby-Vegeta then fights Uub at his full potential, and moves in for the kill by firing a Revenge Death Ball at the young warrior. But unknown to Baby-Vegeta, who received a report from Bulma and left for Planet Vegeta, Uub survived thanks to the timely intervention of Buu.
To his shock, Baby-Vegeta is confronted once again by Uub, only this time, a bulkier, Buu-dressed and lighter-skinned version of Uub the result of a metamorphosis fusion between Uub and Majin Buu. Baby-Vegeta then resumes the battle against Uub, and the two seem evenly matched, until Uub demonstrates his new power by turning a lot of hypnotized people into chocolate using a Henka Beam from his fingertip. Baby-Vegeta is then almost defeated when Uub fires a Henka Kamehameha at him. Baby-Vegeta, however, declares that he has had "enough playing", and exerts himself further, quickly pushing Uub's beam back at him, and turning the fighter into a harmless piece of chocolate and devouring him. Goku then returns to the battlefield.
Having undergone a tail-regrowing process, Goku engages Baby-Vegeta in combat, but Baby-Vegeta still overpowers Goku, and moves in for the final blow when Goku undergoes a mysterious transformation by looking at the Earth. Baby-Vegeta witnesses Goku transform into a Golden Oozaru, but Baby-Vegeta still has the advantage, since Goku has lost control. Goku goes on a rampage and Baby-Vegeta is barely able to dodge Goku's attacks.
Eventually, when Oozaru-Goku is confronted by Pan, he comes to his senses and transforms into a Super Saiyan 4 right before Baby-Vegeta's eyes. Baby-Vegeta and Goku resume their fight, and Baby-Vegeta sees that he is no match whatsoever for a Super Saiyan 4. In a desperation move, Bulma uses a Bruits Waves Device that transforms Baby-Vegeta into a Golden Oozaru. Although Baby-Vegeta's power has increased beyond that of his adversary, he goes into a blind rage, destroying much of his own city. Believing his enemy to have been reduced to a mindless monster, Goku prepares to take Baby-Vegeta to an uninhabited area, until Baby-Vegeta blindsides him with a ki blast; something he could not do if he was a mad beast.
Baby-Vegeta reveals that he still has his mind, and his monster act was simply more of his playing. He then explains that, while Vegeta has become an ape, Baby is still in control (this dialogue was removed in the English dub, replacing it with Baby explaining why his mouth does not move when he talks). After swatting Goku away, Baby decides to further demonstrate his superior power by blasting the Saiyan with a series of devastating finger blasts. Because Goku manages to avoid these, Baby changes tactics, and attacks his family. Finally, Baby and Goku come to blows, leading the parasite to spite Goku further by blasting the Earth with an uncharged Super Galick Gun, which destroys much of Satan City in an explosion visible from Planet Tsufuru. In retaliation, Goku blasts Baby-Vegeta with a x10 Kamehameha, which seems to have no effect.
While the initial blast may not have harmed Baby-Vegeta, it was a delayed blast, which catches Baby off-guard, and stops his attack. Eventually, Baby-Vegeta and Goku both land a knockout punch on each other and fall. But the mind controlled Bulma uses the Bruits Wave machine to replenish Baby's power, waking him up at the same time as Goku, and they resume the fight. Because Baby-Vegeta's energy was replenished and Goku's was not, he easily beats down Goku. Making matters worse, Goku's friends and family, freed from Baby's control, join the fight, and Baby begins to target them. Because Baby is aware of Goku's loss of energy which has caused him to be unable to use his abilities and power to the full, Goku's taunting and psychological tactics are useless, and Baby ignores him as he attacks the others.
Finally, Baby prepares to wipe everyone out with a heavily charged Super Galick Gun. Unfortunately for the Tsufurujin parasite, Uub, who is still active inside Baby-Vegeta's body, powers up and attacks him from the inside, inflating his stomach, causing him great pain, and stopping him from unleashing the lethal blast. Baby-Vegeta tries to counter Uub's power, but finds himself unable to attack a man inside him, driving him to the point of spitting Majuub out of his mouth. Baby-Vegeta then sees the cured Trunks, Goten, Gohan and Pan giving their power to Super Saiyan 4 Goku. To stop them, Baby-Vegeta fires a super Galick Gun at the five saiyans. Although Pan, Trunks, Gohan and Goten are knocked out, Goku emerges unharmed from the explosion, renewed and prepared to resume the battle against the Tsufurujin parasite.
Having been greatly weakened by Uub's earlier interior attack, Baby-Vegeta's power is now even with Goku's. However, due to his complete lack of focus, and ever-increasing rage, Baby-Vegeta finds himself unable to harm Super Saiyan 4 Goku, who ultimately takes his opportunity to chop Baby-Vegeta's tail off, reverting him to a beaten and battered Form 3 Baby-Vegeta. In a last ditch effort to escape alive, Baby leaves Vegeta's body and attempts to escape from Planet Tsufuru in his spaceship. He is then destroyed by Gokus kamehameha. He along with all the on earth is teleported to planet Tuffle due to the wish was made from the black star dragon balls.

Before Dragon Ball had even began, Vegeta's homeworld; Planet Vegeta was destroyed by the tyrant Freeza. Vegeta, who had been told his planet was destroyed by a meteor, worked willingly for Freeza, helping him spread his empire throught the galaxy. He first appears in the Saiyan saga where he and his accomplice Nappa attempt to conquer earth and use the Dragon Balls for immortality. They are thwarted by Goku and the rest of Earth's fighters. Afterwards Vegeta returns to Planet Freeza to heal his wounds. After he is healed, Vegeta learns of Freeza's quest for the Namekian Dragon Balls. Vegeta then heads for Planet Namek in order to gain the Dragon Balls himself. Vegeta defeats two of Freeza's elite henchmen, Zarbon and Dodoria, while on Namek, and is later forced to team up with Son Gohan and Kuririn to defeat the Ginyu Force.

Later Vegeta fights Freeza and forces him to transform, though is defeated and later killed by the latter. Vegeta is wished back to life by the Dragon Balls and is transported to Earth along with Gohan, Bulma and several Namekians. Vegeta spends the next few years on Earth at the Capsule Corporation with Bulma and Yamcha. Vegeta is present when Future Trunks arrives and kills the rebuilt Freeza. He and the rest of the Z-Warriors follow Future Trunks to the site where Son Goku is to arrive. After Goku's arrival, Vegeta learns of the coming of two androids that will kill them all and decides to train for the occasion.

<!-- Its Cell saga folks, please don't change it to android -->
After Goku gets trapped in Hell and is forced to fight Freeza and Cell, Vegeta claims that he is the Earth's protector in the case of Goku's absence and is determined to win the battle against Super 17 (the fusion of Android 17 from the Cell Saga and a newer version of 17, a Machine Mutant created in Hell). He powers up to Super Saiyan 2 and uses his new attack, the Final Shine Attack, however this proves futile, as Super 17 simply absorbs the attack. But then Goku comes back and with some help from #18 he destroys him with his Super Dragon Fist attack.
During the three years given to train for the androids, Vegeta and Bulma begin a relationship which would eventually lead to the birth of their son, Trunks. Also during this time, Vegeta gains the ability to become a Super Saiyan. When the androids finally appear 3 years later, Vegeta arrives to save Goku and uses his newfound Super Saiyan abilities to kill Android 19. Vegeta later fights Artificial Human 18 and is soundly defeated by her. Angered by his defeat Vegeta decides to Train in the Room of Spirit and Time with Future Trunks to combat the Androids. Vegeta returns from the Room of Spirit and Time with the ability to transform into a Super Saiyan 2nd Grade. Vegeta uses the form to fight the new threat of Cell. Vegeta easily defeats Cell but is beaten when Cell absorbs Artificial Human 18 and transforms into his final form. Vegeta later participates in the Cell games and watches as Cell is defeated by Gohan.

Years later, Vegeta enters the Tenkaichi Budokai in hopes of fighting Goku. The tournament is interrupted when the Kaioshin asks Goku and company to help him defeat Bobidi the Wizard. Vegeta reluctantly follows in hopes of fighting Goku. Vegeta then allows Bobidi to take over his body, turning him into Majin Vegeta. Majin Vegeta fights Goku until their fight is interrupted by the emergence of Majin Buu. Vegeta knocks out Goku with a sneaky move and fights Buu. Seeing that Buu will regenerate from any damage, Vegeta decides to use all of his energy to create a large scale explosion in a last ditch attempt to defeat Buu. Buu unfortunately regenerates while Vegeta dies from using all of his energy.
Shadow Dragon Saga

Vegeta is not seen again until later in which he reluctantly fuses with Goku to become Vegetto. After Vegetto is absorbed by Super Buu, Vegeta assists Goku in rescuing everyone absorbed by Buu. Vegeta also rips out the original Buu from Super Buu which causes Super Buu to revert back to Kid Buu, Buu's original form. Vegeta along with Goku, Mr. Satan and Dende are transported to the planet of the Kaioshin when the earth is destroyed by Kid Buu. During the battle with Buu Vegeta helps Goku buy time to create a Genki Dama that will kill Buu.

After Buu is destroyed, Vegeta returns to earth and lives a quiet lifestyle for the next 10 years. During this time Vegeta and Bulma have their second child, Bra. Vegeta competes in the Tenkaichi Budokai again and watches as Goku leaves with Uub.
As Goku continues to have trouble against the One Star Dragon, Yi Xing Long, Vegeta comes to his aid. Transforming into a Golden Oozaru, due to the Blutz Wave Generator (a device invented by Bulma), Vegeta proceeded to become a Super Saiyan 4 as he had full control over the Oozaru form. When even this form failed to stop the Shadow Dragon, Goku and Vegeta fused to become Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta. Gogeta overwhelmed Yi Xing Long in power almost bringing the heroes to victory, but the fusion time ran out before they could deliver the final blow. The two separate and are beaten until Goku uses a Genki Dama to take out the creature. Eventually, thanks to the people of the Earth and of the entire universe, Goku gains a big enough Genki Dama to destroy Yi Xing Long. Before leaving forever, Goku tells Vegeta that the lives of everyone are now in his hands, passing the role of protector of the Earth and anyone in need of help to Vegeta.
Years later in Dragon Ball GT Vegeta is taken over by the parasite Baby and is turned into Baby Vegeta. Baby Vegeta is defeated by Super Saiyan 4 Goku, and Vegeta is returned to normal. Later Vegeta is a participant in the battle against Super 17 in which he is nearly killed but saved by Goku. Vegeta also helps Goku in the battle against Yi Xing Long, in the battle Vegeta transforms for the first and only time into a Super Saiyan 4.

Vegeta also has a large library of abilities and attacks, mostly due to the fact that he uses a new attack in almost every fight. Like most other characters, Vegeta has the ability to use Bukujutsu (lit. "lighter than air skill"), which allows him to take flight. His signature attack, Gyarikku Hou (or Garlic Gun, in keeping with the Saiyan puns on vegetables), is a beam similar to the Kamehameha, though fuchsia and released with the palms open rather than having the fingers curve inwards. Ironically, this technique is used very rarely in the series, though is usually one of his techniques in many of his different video game counterparts. In Dragon Ball GT, this attack is replaced with the Final Shine Attack. It is fairly similar to his Gyarikku Hou, though green in color.

Vegeta (ベジータ, Bejīta) or Prince Vegeta is a fictional character, supervillain, anti-hero and later superhero in the anime and manga series Dragon Ball Z and appears in Dragon Ball GT, as well as Neko Majin Z as a goof by Akira Toriyama. He appears in all Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball GT sagas and is the rival to the series' main protagonist Son Goku. Vegeta is also the prince of the Saiyans, a nearly extinct warrior race.

His name is generally considered to be a pun on either vegetable or the condiment vegeta.

Appearance

Vegeta's build when he first appears in Dragon Ball Z is short and stocky, and he remains short for the course of the series, even though in the anime he becomes more slender and muscular as time goes on. Vegeta's hair is black though in the anime, his hair was dark brown at times. Because he is a full blooded Saiyan, Vegeta's hair never grows past a certain point[1]

Vegeta's skin tone is a medium shade of tan, in color. As a full-blooded Saiyan, Vegeta once had a monkey-like tail that was usually seen wrapped around his waist like a belt. After his first battle with Goku and his friends, it was cut off by Yajirobe.

Vegeta usually is seen wearing white gloves, white light-weight boots and battle armor that varied in appearance over a dark blue skin-tight body suit. Vegeta stops wearing battle armor after the Cell saga and after the Buu saga, Vegeta stops wearing the boots, gloves and body suit and is then on seen in more Earth-like attire.

Plot overview

Vegeta is wished back to life by the Dragon Balls and is transported to Earth along with Gohan, Bulma and several Namekians[2][3].

During the three years given to train for the androids, Vegeta and Bulma begin a relationship which would eventually lead to the birth of their son, Trunks. Also during this time, Vegeta gains the ability to become a Super Saiyan. When the androids finally appear 3 years later, Vegeta arrives to save Goku and uses his newfound Super Saiyan abilities to kill Android 19[4]. Vegeta later fights Artificial Human 18 and is soundly defeated by her. Angered by his defeat Vegeta decides to Train in the Room of Spirit and Time with Future Trunks to combat the Androids. Vegeta returns from the Room of Spirit and Time with the ability to transform into a Super Saiyan 2nd Grade[5]. Vegeta uses the form to fight the new threat of Cell. Vegeta easily defeats Cell but is beaten when Cell absorbs Artificial Human 18 and transforms into his final form. Vegeta later participates in the Cell games and watches as Cell is defeated by Gohan.

Years later, Vegeta enters the Tenkaichi Budokai in hopes of fighting Goku[6]. The tournament is interrupted when the Kaioshin asks Goku and company to help him defeat Bobidi the Wizard. Vegeta reluctantly follows in hopes of fighting Goku. Vegeta then allows Bobidi to take over his body, turning him into Majin Vegeta[7]. Majin Vegeta fights Goku until their fight is interrupted by the emergence of Majin Buu. Vegeta knocks out Goku with a sneaky move and fights Buu. Seeing that Buu will regenerate from any damage, Vegeta decides to use all of his energy to create a large scale explosion in a last ditch attempt to defeat Buu[8]. Buu unfortunately regenerates while Vegeta dies from using all of his energy[9].

During this time Vegeta and Bulma have their second child, Bra[10]. Vegeta competes in the Tenkaichi Budokai again and watches as Goku leaves with Uub.

Powers and abilities

As a member of the Saiyan race, Vegeta possesses a large number of transformations that enhance his abilities to varying degrees and alter his physical appearance. Vegeta has the ability to become an Oozaru, so long as he still has his tail,[11] which increases his strength tenfold.[12] He also eventually learns to become a Super Saiyan on several different levels, increasing his physical strengths and capabilities even further. Furthermore, Vegeta can perform the Fusion Dance with Goku to become Gogeta.[13]

In Dragon Ball GT, this attack is replaced with the Final Shine. It is fairly similar to his Gyarikku Hou, though green in color.

Appearances in other media

Vegeta has appeared in many Dragon Ball Z- and Dragon Ball GT-related video games as both a playable character and boss. Often times, he is playable in several different forms, such as his Super Saiyan transformations and even Majin Vegeta and Oozaru Vegeta. Baby Vegeta is also often times a playable character and boss in GT-related games.

Vegeta has been a representative of the series in various crossover pieces of media. These include video games, such as Battle Stadium D.O.N and Jump Super Stars; Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball self parody Neko Majin; and Cross Epoch, a Dragon Ball and One Piece crossover manga.
