The Story is a 2010 film written by Christopher DeMeo and directed by Sanzhar Sultanov. The film is a crime drama that uses nonlinear narrative to intertwine the lives of ten criminals, with a set of seemingly random events.

Plot
Part 1: The Storyteller and The Wannabe
The Wannabe is a man determined to impress his boss by murdering one of his competitors, a mysterious business mind simply known as The Man. He sets out on this unlikely sojourn with information provided by an eccentric, seemingly omniscient bar-dweller called The Storyteller. The Storyteller warns him, quite dramatically, that any attempt made by The Wannabe will result in his life spiraling out of control and eventually his own death. The Wannabe does not heed his warning, and heads out.

Along the way, a series of strange and inexplicable events take hold of him, from being shot by a corpse to being viciously brutalized by a man whom he never sees, to finding locals seemingly spontaneously murdered, all in one day. The audience is taken on his journey of confusion from its foreboding inception to its abrupt halt - and then the day starts over.

Part 2: The Businessman and The Assistant
This time the story that unfolds is that of two people unrelated to The Wannabe; a businessman and his assistant, whose business is primarily concerned with bribery, extortion, human trafficking, and various other illegalities. Throughout the course of their day, decisions and moves they make are revealed to have directly influenced (or even caused) a number of events that so severely affected The Wannabe, completely by accident.

Their fiscally selfish endeavors bring them into the circle of such people as The Wannabe's boss (The Boss), as well as The Man that The Wannabe set out to murder. They also come into contact with the duo the comprises the third part of The Story, a drug dealer and his thieving companion.

Part 3: The Dealer and The Thief
The Dealer and The Thief set out to amass $50,000, which they owe to The Businessman in a time-frame of just 8 hours. After tossing around a myriad of strategies, they come to the conclusion their best chance is a big score on a home robbery. They mistakenly believe that it will be a simple, typical robbery, but find themselves plunged into the tangled web of murder and uncertainty that plagued The Wannabe.

Part 4: The Genius and The Sneak
The viewer is brought to the perspective of a paranoid computer genius hired by The Boss, to spy on The Man. The Genius, convinced that The Boss means only to kill him, employs the services of his daring, sarcastic counterpart, The Sneak. He informs The Sneak to plant the bugging equipment inside The Man's house, as well as secretly allaying or confirming The Genius' suspicions. The tangled web of interwoven stories continues to grow as their path crosses directly through that of The Dealer, The Thief and The Wannabe.

Part 5: The Man
The fifth and concluding part of The Story reveals the events of the most enigmatic character of all, THE MAN. Finally, at the end of the day, all is explained to the viewer, and all of the wonders, questions and uncertainties they may have had, are answered. And it is at last realized that a story is not comprised of but one perspective from one person. Understanding can only be attained through recognition of all angles, all causes, and all effects.

That is the nature of conflict. That is the nature of life. That is the nature of The Story.

Development
The Story was first written in January 2008. Christopher DeMeo had drafted the script as a presentation to his literary agent, while studying at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute. While at the Institute, DeMeo met Sanzhar Sultanov. Having shown Sultanov the script, the two immediately read through the script, acting out each character. After the read through, DeMeo and Sultanov talked of plans to turn the script into a film. A few months went by and DeMeo proposed that Sultanov direct the script.
