John Earle Sullivan is a political activist, photojournalist, and former Olympic athlete, competing in the 2018 Winter Olympics as a speed skater.[1]

He was arrested in July 2020 on accusations of rioting and making threats in association with the George Floyd protest in Provo. According to a police affidavit he damaged vehicles and cooperated with Insurgence USA (an anti-fascist activist group against police brutality which he founded) to recruit protesters for a protest.[2][3] No permit was obtained for the protest.[4] Sullivan described the SUV driver that Jesse Taggart was charged with shooting to have been attempting to run people over.[5]

Sullivan illegally entered the United States Capitol in January 6, 2021 (the day of the Capitol riots), capturing on video the death of Ashli Babbitt,[6] being near when she was shot.[7] Sullivan later spoke to police and FBI agents about the shooting.[8]

Because he used the hashtags #BLM and #Antifa on Facebook, Sullivan was the subject of right-wing conspiracy theories which claimed antifa were behind the Capitol riots.[8] Although there as a photojournalist, he filmed himself chanting "let's burn this shit down" before heading into the building; he said this was to "blend in" with the riotous crowd.[8] On January 13, Sullivan was charged federally with being on restricted property, civil disorder and "violent entry or disorderly conduct".[9]
