Queen Anhye of the Yu clan (?–1232) (안혜왕후 유씨) was a Queen Consort of Goryeo. She was the spouse of king Gojong of Goryeo. [1]

She was daughter of Huijong of Goryeo, and the cousin of her spouse.

Life

The future Queen Anhye was born to King Huijong and Queen Seongpyeong as their first daughter. Her husband, Gojong, is her sixth cousin, and is a rare close marriage in the late Goryeo Dynasty. She changed her surname from Wang to Yu when she became queen consort of Gojong, but it is not known what the change was based on. However, Queen Wondeok, the mother-in-law of Queen Ahnhye and her fifth-degree aunt, had also changed her original surname from Wang to Yu. Queen Wondeok was also the daughter of Princess Changrak.

In 1211, in the 7th reign of King Huijong, she became known as Princess Seungbok (승복궁주, 承福宮主) when she married Gojong, and became Queen Consort when her husband ascended the throne as king in 1218.

She later died in 1232 in the 19th year of her husband’s reign which brought the king to wear mourning clothes for three days and grieve over her death. He later gave her the posthumous title of Queen Anhye (안혜, 安惠)

When her eldest son, Wonjong, became crowned in 1260 (in July of the lunar calendar), she was given another posthumous title “Empress Anhye of the Yu clan” (Hangul: 안혜태후 유씨, Hanja: 安惠太后 柳氏).

After her death, Gojong did not remarry.

She had two sons and one daughter with Gojong.
