Lalengmawia (born 17 October 2000), commonly known as Apuia, is an Indian footballer who plays as a midfielder for Indian Super League club NorthEast United FC and India national football team. He is the youngest player in the history to captain an Indian Super League club, by doing so for NorthEast United FC, at an age 20 years and 44 days.

Early life

Lalengmawia belongs to Indian state of Mizoram. His father works as butcher.[1][2] He started playing football at the age of 6.[2] He represented his school in Subroto Cup.[1]

Club career

Apuia started his club career with the developmental club Indian Arrows, making two appearances in their 2017–18 season.

NorthEast United

In 2019, he was signed by the Indian Super League club NorthEast United. On 30 November 2020, Apuia captained the NorthEast United side for the first time in their 1–1 away draw against Goa.[3] It made him the Youngest captain in the history of the Indian Super League at 20 years and 44 days. Apuia even went on to be awarded Hero of the Match.[4]He scored his first goal for NorthEast United in a 2-0 win against Kerala Blasters on 26th February 2021. Apuia's contract is extended until 2022.[5]

International career

On 2 March 2021, Apuia got selected for the 35-man-squad national camp ahead of India national team's friendlies against Oman and UAE.[6] On 25 March 2021, he made his international debut for India against Oman, which ended on a 1-1 draw.[7][8]
