The Canadian Medical Education Journal (CMEJ) is an online open-access peer-reviewed medical education journal.[1][2][3] CMEJ examines subject matter relating to the formation, education, and training of health care professionals in Canada and internationally.[2][4] The target audience includes medical education researchers, practitioners and professionals, universities and their trainees.[5] CMEJ publishes six online issues/year.[6] As of December 2020, CMEJ has 2043 registered readers.[7] The issues are archived in PubMed Central (PMC), at the U.S. National Institutes of Health's National Library of Medicine (NIH/NLM).[2][8] CMEJ is also archived through Érudit beginning in 2020.[9] CMEJ has a five-partner team of advisors from the Association of Faculties of Medicine Canada, the Canadian Association for Medical Education, the College of Family Physicians Canada, the Medical Council of Canada, and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Canada. The co-chairs are affiliated with AFMC and CAME.[10]

History of the journal

CMEJ was founded by Dr. Claudio Violato[12] and Dr. Tyrone Donnon in 2010 out of the University of Calgary as a response to the increased medical innovation and activity in Canada (and elsewhere). They saw the need for a national journal to share scholarship, research findings and innovations.[13] The inaugural issue was published March 2010.[13] The journal was initially run by three people: Dr. Donnon served as the Associate Editor, Dr Violato served as the Chief Editor, and a graduate assistant served as a Managing Editor.[10] In 2014, Dr Marcel D'Eon became editor-in-chief out of the University of Saskatchewan. Dr. Jennifer O’Brien also became the Managing Editor in 2014.[10] CMEJ published 1–2 issues per year in 2010–2015. By 2016, it published three issues; four in each of 2017, 2018, and 2019; and six for 2020. It began with about 90 pages per year to now over 400 pages per year.

In 2020 the CMEJ began a collaboration with the Canadian Federation of Medical Students (CFMS) to circulate bi-monthly summaries of select CMEJ papers written by or impacting medical students to their membership of over 8000 students from 15 Canadian medical schools.[14]

In 2020 and 2021, the CMEJ entered into an agreement with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada to publish research poster abstracts and What Works paper and poster abstracts for the International Conference on Residency Education (ICRE)[15]. The International Conference on Residency Education (ICRE) is the world’s largest conference devoted exclusively to advancing residency education. CMEJ also publishes conference abstracts for Canadian Conference on Medical Education[16] (CCME) - the largest annual gathering of medical educators in Canada; and in 2020, the PIF Twitter Conference hosted by Education Innovation Institute at the Medical College of Georgia.[17]
