Shelly Martinez (born February 9, 1980) is an American model, professional wrestler and a professional wrestling valet currently working for World Wrestling Entertainment on its ECW brand under the ring name Ariel.
Modeling
Martinez did a nude modeling video called American Pinups before getting into wrestling.
Southern California
Martinez was trained and first wrestled in Southern California, appearing in several independent promotions, notably Ultimate Pro Wrestling, Revolution Pro Wrestling, and Empire Wrestling Federation where she first worked with Melina under gimmicks where they were sisters.
World Wrestling Entertainment
Ohio Valley Wrestling
In April 2005, Martinez signed a developmental contract with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). By July of that year she was placed in WWE's primary developmental territory, contra for further training. Shelly debuted in OVW as the co-manager for Aaron Stevens along with Beth Phoenix, a group which broke up within the year. While training in OVW Shelly participated in numerous feuds with the likes of Beth Phoenix, Serena, Sosay, and Fuji Cakes. Martinez beat Mickie James to win her debut singles match at an OVW house show on October 29. In late December, Shelly and Beth Phoenix revived their "co-manager" gimmick to accompany Aaron Stevens to the ring at several WWE SmackDown! house shows for tryout matches. They also appeared together on the January 27, 2006 episode of WWE Heat as part of The Heart Throbs "Throb-o-Meter" section, dancing in the ring with The Heart Throbs and teasing a kiss, before being interrupted by Trevor Murdoch.
At the February 22, 2006 OVW TV Tapings, Shelly came to ringside and attacked Sosay during an Elijah Burke vs Robbie Dawber match. Around this time she started a gimmick of being "obsessed" with Paul Burchill who, at the time, was using a pirate gimmick on SmackDown!. As such she started dressing in pirate garb.
On the May 6, 2006 edition of WWE Velocity, Martinez appeared as buxom wench Shelly to manage Paul Burchill in his pirate gimmick for Burchill's match against The Road Warrior, however the angle was dropped after one match. [1]
Martinez then became involved in Seth Skyfire's ongoing feud with Mike "The Miz" Mizanin and Roni Jonah.
ECW
Shelly debuted in World Wrestling Entertainment as Ariel, working on their ECW brand as a tarot-reading fortune teller on the June 20, 2006 episode of ECW on Sci Fi. She was later joined by Kevin Thorn, a vampire character who had previously been seen stalking ECW arenas, as she announced that she "saw a future that held blood" followed by Thorn spitting "blood" at the camera. From there, she began acting as a valet for Thorn, joining him at ringside for his matches and kissing him during them. On September 5, Ariel turned a lot of heads when she gave commentator Joey Styles a lap dance. On September 19, she got into her first ECW catfight when Francine accompanied Balls Mahoney to ringside for a match against Thorn. Ariel made her (ECW) in-ring debut against Francine on September 26 in an "Extreme Catfight", ruled a no-contest due to interference from both Thorn and Mahoney. The angle was soon dropped when Francine was released from WWE. When the ECW brand held its first pay per view, December to Dismember, Ariel and Thorn defeated Kelly Kelly and Mike Knox in a mixed tag team match. In February of 2007, Ariel along with Kevin Thorn joined The New Breed faction which contains some of the younger extremists on the ECW roster. They are currently feuding with the ECW Originals.
