The Rivian R1S is an all-electric, full-size off-road SUV manufactured by Rivian Automotive. Customer deliveries started in 2022.[3][4] The car took nearly 10 years to develop.[5] It has four electric motors.[5][better source needed]
About
The Rivian R1S debuted as a prototype model shown in 2018.[5] It is designed to hold seven passengers and accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (0 to 97 km/h) in 3 seconds, due to its 835 hp (623 kW; 847 PS) of power.[6] It shares 91% of its components with the Rivian R1T.[7] Rivian's flat, low center of gravity chassis makes it an "electric vehicle skateboard"[8] Rivian has raised $1.3 billion in new funding for this and the R1T Truck.[9] Each wheel has a separate Wheel hub motor, allowing a trailer load of 3.5 tons. The vehicle is equipped for semi-autonomous driving according to level 3 and designed for road traffic and off-road driving.
Storage and towing
Total enclosed cargo volume is 104.7 cu ft (2.96 m3) when the two back seats are folded down. The front trunk ‘frunk’ located where the engine would be, allows for 11.1 cu ft (0.31 m3) of storage.[10] Tows up to 7,700 lbs.[11]
Pets
Pet comfort mode maintains a user-selected temperature inside the car when the driver is away from the vehicle.[10]
Off-road
The vehicle has an air suspension which allows for a maximum ground clearance of 14.9 in (38 cm). Maximum wading depth in water is 43.1 inches, just over three feet.[12]
Delivery delays
Rivian announced in mid-June 2022 that there would be a delay for some deliveries of its R1S electric SUV. The company cites the delay is due to supply chain issues and limited service infrastructure.[13]
Trim levels
The Launch Edition comes with smaller tires than the Adventure and Explore, but has a special color, Launch Green.[14] Explore Package does not have the Premium Sound System or Woodgrain Interior Trim. It also does not have Cooled Front Seats.[14]
