Video Games

I went ahead and took the liberty to add a list of Video Games to the section. I included two lists: the first one lists games that have made it to America that contain 0079 mobile units; the second list contains current generation video games that include said suits (which of course, means nearly all of them thanks to Bandai and Banpresto...). I left out the Super Robot series, since despite the inclusion of Gundam MS and characters, they have exceptionally little to do with the story...--208.104.224.37 03:30, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

Episode Guide

I'll just post what I posted in the discussion for the other page.

"I've often been to some of the Gundam pages and noticed a lack of episode summaries. As I looked at the Gundam page, I thought to myself. I'd recently rented the first two DVDs of the set from Netflix, so why not do it myself? I've done the expansion and revision of the Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law episode guide, and already had the rest of the series waiting to be shipped at any moment. Therefore, I've begun the project of creating episode summaries for the entire Mobile Suit Gundam series. I hope you all enjoy."

So, you can visit. I've linked to it on the Gundam page where the episodes are. I just got the third DVD in the mail, and will work on that. It's ok. I've added character bios for almost all of the characters on the Gundam 0080 page, but I'm unsure how to properly insert the character pics. Anyway, I could do summaries for those eps and 0083 eps too. But I haven't seen a lot of Anime series pages with summaries.--Zenigundam 20:58, 11 March 2006 (UTC)

Restructuring

Since I'm restructuring all Gundam-related pages, please be patient until my work is finished.

I recently helped restructure the Gundam SEED/Cosmic Era section, and I intend to format these pages in a similar way.

My edits to this an other pages include:

• new templates, for Universal Century and for Alternate Timelines (done)
• adding the template to all pages (done)
• removing the old (incomplete) template (done)
• restructuring categories (done)
• merging pages with small content into more comprehensive pages and redirecting (done)
• creating unique pages, for all the series of the UC, for mobile units (done), ships (done), characters (to do), locations (to do), nations (done)
• moving all suitable material to those pages, cleaning up the individual series' pages (work-in-progress)
• creating history pages, containing detailed chronology of the major events (work-in-progress)
• moving all the episode titles listings into a single page (done).

Ideally, in my view, a page about a series should contain only general info, production info and a small synopsis. All material that is common to more than one series (characters, ships, mobilesuits, history) should go on dedicated pages.

For the same reason I moved the episode listings to a unique page. This information is not essential, and lenghtens unneccessarily the page. If needed, the info is on the Comprehensive Episode Linting page, as clearly indicated in the template.

If you do not agree just state it here and we can discuss a common approach. Cooperation is not only welcome, it's essential. --IgorTrieste 08:28, 27 May 2005 (UTC)

Yes, there are plenty of lists. However, mobiles suits are, of course, the core of the series. Personally, I see it important that each series has a complete listing of the mobile suits and characters from it. 17:49, 30 May 2005 (UTC)

Igor, I understand that ideally your page would only contain the basic information, but I seem to get the feeling that many of us share the belief that the page for the series should encompass all of the information of the series, not just the smallest aspects. Yes that may make the page a little long, but in actuality I think that makes it much easier on the gentle reader in the long run.

Frankly, it is now more difficult to find information pertaining to a specific series. Instead of a general listing for each series in that series' own page, we now have lists of lists for every series all lumped into one. And make no mistake, those lists are quite long, or will be anyway upon completion. They are also tricky to find, jumbled in with many other lists at the bottoms of pages. I still, for the life of me, cannot find some of the articles that were listed on this very page. There is also a multitude of excess information on those other compilation pages that the viewer may not want to know, about series they may not want to know about yet because they have not seen them.

I believe all of the Gundam pages should be reverted back. I think unit lists, characters, and episode lists all have a place on each series' page because in the end, although it does increase the length of the page a small ammount, it makes it all much easier for the reader to find relevant information. --Necropenguin 2:20, 31 May 2005 (UTC)

Ok, I'm open to suggestions.

• since a lot of material pertinent to the first series has been widely reused in the other UC series, seems logical to me to cite that material only once; for example, almost all of the characters of the first series are seen again in some other series; many mobile suits, especially those mass-produced, are seen thorough the UC in all the series and movies; the locations, places, nations, factions are the same, and even if they evolve, a single article makes it much more clear to follow the story
• contrary to some more atomic series, che first series (or any other Gundam series), is not a unique historical telling of a whole period or war; there is a background common history; a single series is intended to tell about a group of people and their understanding of the historical happenings; although it can sometimes be the only witnessing of that events (eg. Victory Gundam, ZZ), it still makes sense to compose a series of pages that impartially tell the historical events, from a wider perspective; especially the One Year War, so many times referenced and shown, so many facets and point of view, needs a broader and more detached narration;
• I'm not saying in any way that the actual historical pages are impartial or wide-scope; I just made the structure into which anyone can contribute; I will, in time, too;
• of course there is the problem with spoiling a series to someone who has not seen it yet; the main plot points of a series are twofold: the historical events and the personal character development of the protagonists; the latter shouldn't be a problem, residing on a dedicated page; the historical events I'm afraid are part of the main history timeline, there is not much you can do to avoid them; for example, if someone had seen Zeta but not 0083, the fact why the Titans were created in the first place is a historical fact, not a plot event that can spoil the enjoyment, I think; the historical pages are anyway separated by periods, the Operation Stardust (0083) is indeed separated from the page about Zeta history (which does not yet exist); the main point here is the One Year War; there are many series there and a single page of history; anyway you can't retell a chronology of a war multiple times; and specifically, there is nothing in the chronology of the war that can spoil the 08th MS Team, or 0080
• the MS listing is awkward to begin with; there are so many models listed, some of which probably appeared only once and were totally irrelevant to the plot; I didn't want to delete anything, so I just put all toghether, like I did in the Cosmic Era section where it is much more structured (go take a look: Cosmic Era Mobile Units); of course it needs cleaning, the more the reason to have it all in a single location and not scattered among series, duplicated, incomplete, unmaintainable
• I took particular care not lo lose any link, but I probably overlook something; by any means, if you are aware of any pages that are not linked anymore, please tell me, or put them in some category like Universal Century or Gundam so I can clean them up (I'm still cleaning the Gundam category, btw)
• I'm not finished yet, so don't expect this to be some sort of final version; this is intended as a work in progress, so any contribution is welcome, as long as we all go in the same direction; when I came across these pages, they were all scattered, incomplete, redundant, the categories were a total mess, the only template was terribly incomplete; I put all these pages in a schema, a schema which I gradually evolved ('beta-tested') in the Cosmic Era pages, and which seems to have been generally well accepted; you may not agree with this schema, so let's put toghether a schema that anyone can agree with and I will gladly apply it

I simply do not care for any of those edits at all, and looking at the Gundam Seed page I get the feelings that they will not appeal to me later either. To put it frankly and simply the page was better before you changed it, and others have already voiced their dissaproval. I am reverting the pages back. I ask that you do not remove the information again. You asked that we discuss and not decide by ourselves, well we ask that you not ignore that several people dislike what you have done and that you not run these pages as you see fit. The way it was was better for the casual reader in the long run and so I am reverting the page.

Do as you see fit. If this is your idea of collaboration, go ahead. I will not edit this page anymore, nor will a touch any pages you so intelligently decide to revert; after all, discussion means you just say "no it's not right" and revert, right? Explanations, mediations, agreements are for idiots, you certainly don't need those. You don't care for my edits, and that is enough. THIS is what I mean for Wikipedian... boldly revert anything you do not see fit.

BTW, by several people I usually intend somewhat more than two...

Names have "no official spellings"?

This bit has me confused:

in the original Japanese most character and mecha names are in a phonetic script known as katakana, and that there were, therefore, no "official spellings."

What is meant here, exactly? That katakana does not have the concept of spelling? That phonetic scripts don't have spelling? (Surely the opposite is true; phonetic scripts do, as opposed to ideographic ones.) (Please note that I am not an expert on writing systems.)

Or should it just read that the names have no official spellings in English since they come from a language with a different writing system and must be transliterated (in order to represent them with the alphabet an English speaker would know)?

In the case of the Gundam novelizations, it's important to note that it represented the first attempt to deliver Gundam to western audiences in an 'official' capcity. It's true that quite a few existing series were being subbed and distributed through VHS copies and the like, so it was faced with a somewhat daunting task of trying to come up with names that accurately reflected the sounds that the Katanka was tyring to express, while simultaneously making it work as an english word that followed appropriate structure. At the time, the fanbase recognized Char's name as either 'Sha Asble' 'Sha Asnaver' 'Charles Aznable' or 'Char Asunable' depending on which VHS they had copies of.

A gripe

As one who has not seen this series (don't look at me like that!) it is a bit irritating to see nothing in the way of a synopsis in the article. Surely we can do better than that! --King of All the Franks 01:56, 31 December 2005 (UTC)
