The Federal Ministry of Environment is a Ministry of the Federal Government of Nigeria formed in 1999 with the mandate to address environmental issues and also ensure effective coordination of all environment matters in the country.[1] As part of its vision and mission, the ministry sets out to ensure the control of environmental issues and the protection of natural resources conservation. The ministry supervises desertification and deforestation activities, management of flood, erosion and pollution and also climate change and clean energy.

Barr. Mohammed Hassan Abdullahi is the current Minister of Environment. Barr. Mohammed Abdullahi took charge of the affairs of the Ministry of Environment in April, 2022 after he was redeployed as serving Minister of State for Science, Technology and Innovation by President Muhammadu Buhari.[2] He took over from Sharon Ikeazor who was the acting Minister of Environment.[3][4]

Responsibilities

The ministry is responsible for various roles involving national goals of desertification and deforestation, pollution and waste management. The ministry also supervises climate change and clean energy issues. The ministry also enforces environmental standards and regulations in the different parts of the country. The ministry fulfills its responsibilities through its departments and parastatals. It also supervises and provides funding for research institutes such as the Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria (FRIN), Environmental Health and Registration Council of Nigeria (EHORECON) among others. Some other parastatals under the ministry includes; National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA), National Parks Service (NPS), National Agency for the Great Green Wall, National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) and National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA).[5][6]
