History

The bas-relief[1] is located in the temple of Ta Prohm in Cambodia.[2] Ta Prohm was constructed in the late 12th century; this particular carving presumably also dating to that time.[1]

Description

The "stegosaur" in context; note the presence of stylized leaves or petals throughout

The animal depicted in the relief has a convex-shaped back, lined with a series of ornaments reminiscent of the plates of stegosaurian dinosaurs.[2] It is highly likely that these supposed plates are meant to be stylized lotus leaves or petals, which are present not only around the animal depicted but also in nearby reliefs and throughout the temple's artwork, sometimes in a nearly identical manner.[2]

Beyond the superficial resemblance of the plates, the animal shares few similarities with stegosaurs. On the back of its head, it is depicted either with horns (not known from any stegosaur) or large ear flags (which suggests the animal being a mammal).[2]

Identification

The relief is typically identified as a depiction of either a chameleon or a rhinoceros, with stylized foliage in the background.[1]

Some Young Earth creationists have put forth the dinosaur of Ta Prohm as evidence that humans and dinosaurs once coexisted. A replica of the relief is exhibited at the Creation Evidence Museum of Texas.[1]
