Mavka: The Forest Song (Ukrainian: Мавка. Лісова пісня, romanizedMavka. Lisova pisnia) is a 2023 Ukrainian computer-animated fantasy comedy-drama film directed by Oleh Malamuzh and Oleksandra Ruban. Based on the poetic play The Forest Song by poet Lesya Ukrainka, the film draws inspiration from Ukrainian and Slavic folk mythology.[3][7] The film premiere in Ukraine took place on March 2, 2023.[8]

Synopsis

The animated film describes the relationship between forest spirits and people. The main character from among the forest inhabitants is the kind and naive Mavka, who wakes up in the spring to wake up the rest of the spirits. The musician Lukas, to save his sick uncle Leo, goes to the mysterious and forbidden forest to find the tree of life at the suggestion of the cruel Kylina. In fact, Kylina wants to use the nourishing power of the tree to obtain eternal youth. Mavka admires Lukas's musical talent and feelings arise between them.

However, Kylina and her plans to destroy the forest stand in the way of establishing good relations between the inhabitants of the magical forest and humans. In order to achieve his goals, Kylina incites the villagers against the forest spirits. A terrible battle begins between them. During this battle, Mavka, as Guardian of the Forest, summons One, Who Sits in the Rock to bestow her with deadly fiery power. Thanks to this power, Mavka drives the villagers out of the forest, but her consciousness is taken away by One, Who Sits in the Rock. A deadly firestorm descends on the human village. However, thanks to Lucas's music and a common song, the villagers manage to wake up Mavka, stop the firestorm and save themselves.
