OceanBase (fully known as OceanBase Database[1]) is a distributed database[2][3][4][5] released in 2010.[6][7] It was developed by Ant Group,[8][9] with the main products including OceanBase Cloud[7] and the eponymous database.[10] It is a relational DBMS based on shared-nothing architecture.[2][11] The database was adopted by the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China,[12] as well as China Construction Bank.[13][14] OceanBase's products are also utilized in the energy, government, transportation and other industries.[15][16]

In October 2019, OceanBase ranked first in the TPC-C benchmark test,[17] twice as fast as second-place Oracle.[18] On November 11 of the same year, the database processed a peak of 61 million transactions per second.[19] In June 2020, the platform established Beijing OceanBase Technology and started to operate independently.[1][20] In July 2022, it appeared in a Forrester analysis report on translytical data platforms.[21][22]

History

OceanBase was originally developed to serve Alipay transactions.[23] In 2017, the database was commercially available.[3][24] In 2019, it fully replaced the Oracle database in the Alipay system.[19][25][26]

In March 2020, the database was formally opened to the world via AliCloud.[27][28] In May 2020, its performance exceeded 700 million tpmC in the TPC-C test.[29][30] In June of the same year, OceanBase began operations as an independent company.[31]

In June 2021, it officially became open-source.[32] In August 2022, version 4.0 of the database was released.[3][33][34] In November 2022, the 4th version of OceanBase Community Edition became available.[15]
