Kathir Arumugam is an Indian Graphic Designer known for his typography and book cover designs. He worked as a graphic designer for Tamil Nadu Text Book Corporation to redesign the school text book cover patterns. He designed book covers for well-known authors like Sujatha, S.Ramakrishnan, Jeyamohan, Balakumaran.
Life and career
Early life
Kathir was born in Arachalur in 1985, a small village near Erode district. Kathir grew up being heavily inspired and fascinated about art because his father is a street play artist acted in many plays like harichandra, pavazhakodi. He was also influenced by the modern art of Trotsky Marudu. In early, childhood he had more inclination towards creative side and used to Involve in a lot of Minimum interest like pottery and making clay figurines. After his father died, his mother needs to take over the household duty to bring up her children. In his learning, he does many works purposefully, like making banners and painting for billboards, to purchase the writing material required for creative works, he did many unassuming positions, for example, delivering newspapers, painting, and also worked as a construction worker.
Career
Kathir was interested in art which made him quit schooling after completion of the ninth standard at government higher secondary school in Arachalur. He started to work in a design company in Erode as a tea boy at the age of 12. It was the first exposure to graphic designing. After this, he wanted to study graphic designing at Explora design school in erode. He worked every night in a plastic company to earn money for the graphic designing course fee.
Later, Kathir was working at a school as a guide on art for children. A few artists from Chennai had come to teach painting to the children. One of the artist's guna appreciated him for his art works. Unconsciously and unexpectedly, he ended up giving the children guiding on art. He realized that this was a major turning point in his life. He left for Chennai that night without telling anybody along with the artist. Guna introduced him to almost every artist he knew in Chennai. After a long wait, Kathir finally got a job at Uyirmmai Publication as a graphic artist. Also, he was also employed as a graphic designer in SUN Group media & communication layout artist in Dinakaran daily and Kungumam (magazine).
