Warrenton is a town in Warren County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 811 at the 2000 census. Founded in 1779, it is the county seat of Warren CountyTemplate:GR. Warrenton is located in North Carolina's Inner Banks region. It is home to one of the campuses of Vance-Granville Community College.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.3 km² (0.9 mi²), all land.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 811 people, 402 households, and 221 families residing in the town. The population density was 355.8/km² (921.1/mi²). There were 472 housing units at an average density of 207.1/km² (536.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 60.42% White, 36.25% African American, 1.23% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.62% from other races, and 1.36% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.86% of the population.

There were 402 households out of which 18.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.0% were married couples living together, 12.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 45.0% were non-families. 42.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 26.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.02 and the average family size was 2.76.

In the town the population was spread out with 17.8% under the age of 18, 3.8% from 18 to 24, 22.2% from 25 to 44, 25.8% from 45 to 64, and 30.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 49 years. For every 100 females there were 72.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 73.7 males.
