The primary route facilitating the transfer of arms from Iran to Hezbollah in Lebanon involves flights originating from Iran and landing at [[Damascus International Airport]] in Syria. Subsequently, at the Iranian logistics center within Damascus Airport, weapons are discreetly transported using civilian trucks to the Lebanese border. Upon reaching the border, these weapons are then handed over to Hezbollah and distributed throughout Lebanon.{{cn|date=January 2024}}

The interception of convoys in Syria carrying weapons has compelled Iran to utilize Syria's industrial infrastructure to manufacture rockets intended for Hezbollah. IDF intelligence has disclosed Iran's involvement in aiding Hezbollah to establish military facilities within Lebanon, specifically for the production of advanced weaponry.<ref>{{Cite web |title=Leaked US intel files: Iran smuggling weapons hidden in earthquake relief to Syria |url=https://www.timesofisrael.com/leaked-us-intel-files-iran-smuggling-weapons-hidden-in-earthquake-relief-to-syria/}}</ref>{{cn|date=January 2024}}

These actions represent a direct violation of the arms embargo on entities or individuals in Lebanon without proper authorization, as stipulated in [[United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701|UNSC resolution 1701]] (2006). Additionally, they contravene the arms transfer embargo imposed on Iran, as outlined in UNSC resolution 2231 (2015).<ref>{{Cite news |title=Iran, Hezbollah Bolster Presence, Weapon Shipments Near Damascus, Syrian War Monitor Says |url=https://www.haaretz.com/middle-east-news/2022-01-02/ty-article/.premium/iran-hezbollah-bolster-presence-weapon-shipments-near-syrian-capital/0000017f-f497-d460-afff-fff7ae2a0000 |access-date=2024-01-20 |work=Haaretz |language=en}}</ref>{{cn|date=January 2024}}

On 20 January 2024, Brigadier General Sadegh Omidzadeh, an intelligence officer with the Iranian Quds Force in Syria,[2] along with three other officers of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard, were reportedly killed in an Israeli airstrike in Damascus, Syria.[3][4][5] [6] Additionally, a Hezbollah officer, responsible for facilitating weapon deliveries from Iran to Hezbollah in Lebanon, was also among the casualties.[7]

The attack occurred less than a month after Israel had assassinated another high-ranking Iranian general, Razi Mousavi, in Damascus.[8] and two weeks after the assassination of Saleh al-Arouri in Beirut.[9]

Attack

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an Israeli missile strike targeted a four-story building in the Mezzeh district of Damascus. The attack resulted in the death of six individuals, including five Iranians, and the complete destruction of the building where leaders aligned with Iran were having a meeting.[10][11]
