Amber is a student accommodation booking platform that serves over 2 million students worldwide and helps students find residential accommodation. The company was launched in 2016 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Amber partners with universities, property management groups and study-abroad partners to help students find accommodations near campuses.[1]
The company differentiates itself from other real estate marketplaces with a narrowed focus on the student housing market, connecting students to global accommodation providers.[2]
The company has established partnerships with universities, property management groups, and study-abroad organizations.[3][4]
Background
Saurabh Goel and Madhur Gujar, who were batchmates[clarification needed] at IIT Kharagpur, founded Amber in 2016. Goel had worked at Housing.com and co-founded Startuptoday, while Gujar had worked in Axtria consulting and co-founded Doubtbox.com. As students, they noticed a digital market for student accommodation and identified a need for a consolidated solution after witnessing their friends struggle to find suitable housing abroad.[citation needed]
The company was later rebranded as "amber" from AmberStudent in 2021. Amber collaborates with property management organizations globally to present lodging options on its platform. In 2017, the company scaled its operations to the top study-abroad destinations, USA, Canada, UK and Australia.[3]
Edumpus partnered with Amberstudent in 2022.[5] In the same year, the company launched amber+, which provides post-accommodation services such as creating a student bank account, applying for a loan, booking discounted flight tickets, landing internships, and more.[6]
By 2023, amber aims for 100,000 bookings with a gross value of $1 billion.[7]
