Chen-Yu (Phillip) Sheu is a professor [1] with joint appointments in electrical engineering and computer science and biomedical engineering at Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences, University of California, Irvine. He is recognized for his contributions to semantic computing, robotics computing, artificial intelligence, biomedical computing, and multimedia computing.

Sheu is recognized for his more than 100 papers [2] on object-relational data, their applications and knowledge engineering. He has also written papers in Computer Science, Drug Discovery, Biomedical Engineering, Machine Learning.[3] He is also known for his publication of two books: Intelligent Robotic Planning Systems[4] and Software Engineering and Environment - An Object-Oriented Perspective[5] ; and he is also a co-editor of Semantic Computing (IEEE Press/Wiley). [6]

Education

Sheu, an American citizen originally from Taiwan, attended Tsai Hsing School for middle and high school education. He has a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from National Taiwan University[7] and an M.S. in Computer from UC Berkeley. In 1986, he completed his doctoral thesis on "Logic-oriented Object Bases" [8] under the guidance of C.V. Ramamoorthy.[9]

Career and contributions

His research is about semantic computing.[10] From 1986 to 1988, Sheu was an assistant professor at Purdue University in the Department of Electrical Engineering. From 1989 to 1993, he was an associate professor at Rutgers University. Currently, he is a professor at Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences at the University of California, Irvine.

He is known for starting the field of Semantic Computing, Semantics, addresses all the resources including data, documents, tools, devices, processes, and people. Moreover, the scope of Semantic Computing includes analytics, semantics description language and integration, interface, and its applications. The latest development of ChatGPT[11] demonstrates the importance of semantic computing.

Sheu is also recognized for his founding role in renowned conferences and initiatives. He founded the IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Semantic Computing (TCSEM) [12] and the Institute for Semantic Computing Foundation.[13] He has the vision behind the IEEE International Conferences of Semantic Computing (ICSC), [14]Transdisciplinary AI (TransAI) [15], Artificial Intelligence and Health.

Sheu is the founding editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Semantic Computing[16] (IJSC) and the Encyclopedia of Semantic Computing and Robotic Intelligence [17](ESCRI). These platforms have contributed to disseminating knowledge and advancements in the respective fields. At Systems Control Technology Inc. (SCT)[18], he worked as a computer scientist, moreover, at Advanced Micro Devices Inc. [19](AMD), he worked as a product planning engineer.

Sheu's current research interests remain at the forefront of technological innovation. His focus includes semantic computing, robotic computing, artificial intelligence, biomedical computing, and multimedia computing. [20]

Honors and appreciations

Sheu got a IEEE fellow award in 2003 [21] and also he is the inaugural educator-in-chief of the IEEE AI Academy.[22] Sheu is working here on projects involving robotic computing, multimedia computing, biomedical computing, artificial intelligence, and semantic computing. [23]

Books

He has published two books which show the state of the technology and future of semantic computing: [24]

1. Intelligent Robotic Planning Systems [25]

2. Software Engineering and Environment—An Object-Oriented Perspective. [26]

He is also a co-editor of Semantic Computing (IEEE Press/Wiley).[27]
