Intellisense Systems, Inc. is an American technology company, defense contractor, and electronics manufacturer that produces weather stations, avionics displays, and embedded systems for use in the government, defense, and commercial sectors. Their departments include tactical systems, airborne, systems, and emerging technologies have designed, developed, and furnished bespoke technological solutions for military and commercial customers leveraging radio frequency, radar, lidar, and artificial intelligence.
Headquartered in Torrance, California, Intellisense Systems was founded a spinoff of Physical Optics Corporation (POC) in 2017. In 2024, it was named one of America's Best Startup Employers by Forbes.[1]
History
Intellisense Systems began as a merger of two divisions of POC to develop new sensing technology through the Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) program. The company officially began operations with one fully commercialized product—the Micro Weather Station (MWS®)—after winning an SBIR Phase III award from the U.S. Department of Defense Special Operations Command in 2016.[1] Intellisense Systems has manufactured over 2,000 Micro Weather Stations, which are in use in 60 countries on seven continents.
In 2019, Intellisense Systems was awarded $3.26 million by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to commercialize and manufacture the Advance Warning Equipment (AWARE) inundation sensor system.[2] The system integrated pressure transducers, a solar power system, and Internet of things (IoT) connectivity to transmit water level data in urban and rural communities without significant investment in infrastructure. In 2024, production and support of the AWARE inundation sensor system transitioned to a new independent company.[3]
Intellisense Systems expanded its development and manufacturing capabilities into avionics displays and embedded systems with a focus on aircraft modernization and addressing diminishing manufacturing sources. The company currently offers the Video Display Terminal 6 × 8 (VDT-0608) that serves as a form-fit-function replacement for legacy XGA displays with improved viewing angles, optical performance, and reliability.[4] Intellisense Systems also produces a 20 in. by 8 in. large area display that now serves as the primary flight display for the Calidus B-250 light attack aircraft.[5] In 2022, Intellisense Systems won a contract to replace the multi-function controls and displays in the C-5M Super Galaxy.[6] The company also designs, develops, and manufactures smart avionics displays like the 15-in. Primary Flight Display 12 × 9 (PFD–1209) with advanced processing, touchscreen capabilities, and video mixing technology.[7]
In 2020, Intellisense Systems introduced the Integrated Weather Observation System (IWOS®), a modular and portable weather station that can be set up or installed at almost any location in under 15 minutes. The IWOS can be customized to record cloud layer height for aviation operations as well as sea surface temperature and wave height for maritime applications. The United States Air Force selected the IWOS as the preferred tactical weather station and is expected replace their legacy systems with the IWOS by 2027.[8]
