Syamsurizal was born on 25 June 1955, in Selat Panjang, Riau, as the third child and son of the eight children of Aminah and Emir El Wahid.[3] He had two brothers, Ajbar and Nursyaruddin, and five sisters, Yenni Are, Ratna Dewi, Fatmawati, Genala Sari, and Rosmiati.[3] Syamsurizal attended elementary school at SD Negeri 1 Bengkalis from 1967 until 1970. He then attended junior highschool at SMP Negeri 1 Bengkalis from 1970 until 1973 and highschool at SMA Negeri 1 Bengkalis from 1973 until 1976. Syamsurizal later went to University of Riau majoring in business economics, and earned his master's degree from Padjadjaran University majoring in human resources management.[1]
