Shooting
On June 15, 2024, at around 5:00 p.m. EDT, the shooter pulled up a vehicle at the Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad, a play area with water features intended for children.[3] The shooter exited the vehicle and proceeded to fire around 28 rounds, reloading twice, before fleeing the scene in the vehicle. Nine people were struck by gunfire, including two children, one of whom was an 8-year-old boy that was shot in the head.[1] One witness described the shooter as using two handguns during the shooting, and a Glock 9-millimeter handgun and three empty magazines were recovered from the scene.[2][3][4]
Police were able to trace the shooter to a home in Shelby Township, based on an address the discarded handgun was registered to, around half a mile from the scene of the shooting. After failing to make contact with the shooter, police breached the home with drones and personnel and discovered the shooter dead from a self inflicted gunshot wound. A second handgun and what appeared to be a semi-automatic rifle was recovered from the home.[4][1]
