Over the years, Merian C. Cooper, co-director/co-producer of the film and creator of the King Kong character, had offered conflicting answers as to the origin of the story, claiming that he was inspired by a book detailing the newly discovered Komodo dragons of Komodo Island or witnessing an airplane flying over the Empire State Building. Film historian Ray Morton surmised that Cooper likely developed the story in phases, and noted Cooper's fascination with gorillas beginning at six years old after reading Paul Du Chaillu's Explorations and Adventures in Equatorial Africa.[1]
