The 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup final was a Twenty20 International cricket match played at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados on 29 June 2024 to determine the winner of the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup.[1][2] It was played between South Africa and India.[3] In the final, India defeated South Africa by 7 runs to win their second T20 World Cup title.[4] Virat Kohli was named as the Man of the Match for scoring 76 runs off 59 balls while Jasprit Bumrah won the Player of the tournament award.
This match was a repeat of the 2nd semi-final of the 2014 ICC Men's T20 World Cup in which India defeated South Africa by six wickets. As a result of this match Rohit Sharma became the third captain from India to win a ICC Trophy after Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni. India also won a ICC trophy after 11 years, thus breaking their ICC trophy drought. India also became the first team in the T20 World Cup history to win the title undefeated throughout the tournament.
Background
On 22 September 2023, the ICC released the venues that would host matches across the tournament,[5] with the Kensington Oval in Barbados being named as the venue for the finals.[6] On 5 January 2024, the ICC announced the tournament's schedule with the final taking place on 29 June 2024.[7] This was the second final of T20 World Cup after 2010 played at Barbados.
South Africa had qualified for their maiden final of T20 World Cup[8] while India qualified for the final third time after being the champions in 2007 and runner-up in 2014.[9] Both teams qualified for the finals unbeaten, with neither of them losing a Group Stage game or a Super 8 game.[10] Before this match India and the South Africa had played each other six times in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in which India had won four times (2007, 2010, 2012, 2014) and South Africa had won two times (2009 and 2022).[11]

South Africa
South Africa began their T20 World Cup campaign with a victory over Sri Lanka at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium[13] and went on to defeat Netherlands[14] and Bangladesh at the same venue.[15] After defeating Nepal at Arnos Vale, they finished the Group stage as table-toppers of Group D.[16] In the Super 8 stage, they defeated co-hosts United States at North Sound,[17] defending champions England at Gros Islet[18] and former champions and co-hosts West Indies at North Sound, finishing as the table toppers of Group 2.[19]
South Africa further defeated Afghanistan in the semi-final 1 at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in San Fernando in Trinidad and Tobago to earn their place at their maiden T20 World Cup final. Marco Jansen was awarded the Man of the Match for taking 3 wickets.[20]
India
India began their T20 World Cup campaign with a victory over Ireland at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York [21] and went on to defeat their arch-rivals Pakistan[22] and co-hosts United States at the same venue.[23] However, the match with Canada was abandoned due to heavy rainfall at the Central Broward Park in Florida, thus India finished the Group stage as table-toppers of Group A.[24] In the Super 8 stage, they defeated Afghanistan at Kensington Oval in Barbados,[25] Bangladesh at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound [26] and Australia at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground in Gros Islet in Saint Lucia, finishing as the table toppers of Group 1.[27]
India further defeated defending champions England in the semi-final 2 at the Providence Stadium in Guyana to earn their place at the T20 World Cup final for the third time. Axar Patel was awarded the Man of the Match for scoring 10 runs and taking 3 wickets.[28]

On 28 June 2024, the International Cricket Council (ICC) named New Zealand's Chris Gaffaney and England's Richard Illingworth as the on-field umpires, along with England's Richard Kettleborough as the third umpire, Australia's Rod Tucker as the reserve umpire, and West Indies' Richie Richardson as match referee.[29]

Both teams remained unchanged from their semi-final matches. India's captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bat first.[30]

Virat Kohli made a quick start to the innings by scoring 3 boundaries in the first over to Marco Jansen. However Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant were dismissed cheaply in the next over bowled by Keshav Maharaj. Soon Suryakumar Yadav was dismissed by Kagiso Rabada in the fourth over leaving India on 34 runs off 3 wickets. Virat Kohli and Axar Patel tried to stabilize the innings and the partnership managed to score 72 runs leaving India on 106 runs off 4 wickets. But Axar Patel was run out thanks to the quick throw by Quinton de Kock. Shivam Dube joined Kohli in the middle and the duo managed to score 50 runs off 32 balls. However while attempting a big hit to Jansen, Kohli was caught by Rabada. In the last over bowled by Anrich Nortje, India scored 9 runs, however Shivam Dube and Ravindra Jadeja were dismissed and as a result India scored 176 runs off 7 wickets. Kohli was the highest run-scorer for India and scored 76 runs off 59 balls while Keshav Maharaj was the best bowler for South Africa as he picked up 2 wickets for 23 runs in 3 overs.[31][32][33]
South Africa innings
South Africa had a slow start with the early dismissals of Reeza Hendricks and captain Aiden Markram. Quinton de Kock and Tristan Stubbs managed to put a partnership of 58 runs until Stubbs was later dismissed by Axar Patel.[31][32][33] Quinton de Kock fell next with the score being 106/4 (12.3 overs). Then a quickfire 52 from 27 balls by Heinrich Klaasen helped South Africa to go past 150. With 26 needed from 24 balls he was dismissed by Hardik Pandya. Then Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Marco Jansen in the 18th over and conceeded just two runs. Next over Arshdeep Singh conceded only 4 runs with South Africa needing 16 from the last over. Hardik Pandya bowled the last over, in the first ball he took the wicket of David Miller and then Kagiso Rabada in the fifth ball and helped India beat South Africa by 7 runs.[31][32][33]

The final match was broadcast live in India on Star Sports, free-to-air broadcaster DD Sports and free on OTT platform Disney+ Hotstar. In South Africa the match was broadcast live on SuperSport.[38]
The ICC named the following panel of commentators for the final: Harsha Bhogle, Ian Bishop, Carlos Brathwaite, Nasser Hussain, Dinesh Karthik, Kass Naidoo, Shaun Pollock, Ricky Ponting, Ravi Shastri, Ian Smith and Dale Steyn.[39]
