Early life
Born in Lagos State, into a family of seven siblings, Damilola spent a lot of his teenage years exploring the creative space. He became a self-taught graphic designer at age 17. Certain design projects required images that depicted the African perspective on social issues and when Damilola could not find these references he needed to tell his stories, he explored creating his point of view through photography. Officially beginning his career in photography at the age of 19.[1]
In 2015, Damilola made his Documentary Photographer debut as a photography consultant for UNICEF. From 2015 till date, Damilola and his media production company – StoryMaxima, have partnered with several notable organizations to tell stories of impact and shine a light on social issues and human-interest stories that are often neglected by the general media.
In 2018, Damilola became a member of Association Internationale des Étudiants en Sciences Économiques et Commerciales (AIESEC), which translates to ‘International Association of Students in Economics and Commercial Sciences’. During this time, Damilola travelled through 10 cities in Egypt, alongside 25 other students from countries like Indian, Spain, Germany, Pakistan, China and a few others.
Later in the same year, Damilola curated his first solo photography exhibition titled “Angels among men”, in partnership with Onome Akinlolu Majaro (OAM) Foundation, to tackle the misconceptions about people born and/or living with albinism.[7]
This thought-provoking exhibition granted Damilola an opportunity to host his first TEDx Talk in October 2018, titled ‘Understanding and overcoming myths behind biases’ , where he discussed the cultural myths, “seemingly harmless folklores”, stereotypes and daily lives of albinos living in Nigeria, and the importance for society to educate themselves on the facts of albinism and treat individuals born with albinism as well as they treat themselves.
Career
2008 - 2009: Early art direction and commercial photography
In 2008, Damilola Onafuwa began his creative career with graphics design and art direction for school calendars, yearbooks and brochures, events (weddings, church conferences), brand marketing campaigns and more. He also worked as a book cover designer for Richie Adewusi’s ‘Biafra: Lest We Forget’.
2016 - 2019: Early photography, TEDx Talk, nominations and Film work
From 2016 through till 2017, he became a photography consultant for UNICEF Nigeria for the ‘Hard to Reach Project, Nigeria’. During this project, as documentary storytelling typically requires, Damilola travelled across 6 states in Nigeria – Bauchi, Borno, Kano, Kaduna, Katsina and Yobe, to explore the social and economic issues affecting the people who were relevant to this story.[8]
Consequently, between 2016 and 2017, Damilola made his official debut into filmmaking as an Art director & Still Photographer for Tolu Awobiyi’s “Couple of Days” and "Ajuwaya" respectively.
In 2017, Damilola photographed the election in Kibera Slum, Nairobi and the impact of election violence on women and children. He also documented Presidential Candidate, Ralia Amolo Odinga, alongside two notable Kenyan photojournalists and documentary photographers, Brian Otieno and Natalia Jidovanu, during the Kenyan general elections.
In 2018, Damilola became a member of Association Internationale des Étudiants en Sciences Économiques et Commerciales (AIESEC), which translates to ‘International Association of Students in Economics and Commercial Sciences’. During this time, Damilola travelled through 10 cities in Egypt, with 25 other students from countries like Indian, Spain, Germany, Pakistan, China and a few others
Soon after his northeastern African tour, Damilola curated his first solo photography exhibition titled “Angels among men”,[9] in partnership with Onome Akinlolu Majaro (OAM) Foundation, to tackle the misconceptions about people born and living with albinism. With this exhibition, Damilola highlighted the silent struggles and lives of albinos living in Nigeria, whilst challenging society to overcome the myths and unfair biases towards individuals and groups.[10][11]
This thought-provoking exhibition granted Damilola an opportunity to host his first TEDx Talk in October 2018, titled ‘Understanding and overcoming myths behind biases’, where he discussed the cultural myths, “seemingly harmless folklores”, stereotypes and daily lives of albinos living in Nigeria, and the importance for society to educate themselves on the facts of albinism, and to treat individuals born with albinism as well as they treat themselves.

He often uses storyboards to visualize his sequences before going to the field to bring a story of interest to life.
In 2022, Damilola curated a portrait collection featuring children among items his Granddad left behind titled "Grandad's Possessions". [16]These portraits reflect the endless cycle of eras repeating themselves; with the children immersed in settings of vinyl discs, old television sets, cassette players and other antiques. These items reflect multiple ‘timelines’ - to some individuals these items are nostalgic, to others it is vintage or classical and to a few, these items are completely unreal.
