The railway system in Northamptonshire contains within it main lines, branch lines, former lines, and heritage railways.

History

At its peak, Northamptonshire had 75 railway stations compared with its current number of 6.

Light rail

Currently Northamptonshire has no light rail. However, Northampton historically had a horse powered tramway until 1906.

Current operations

Northamptonshire is presently served by three unconnected main lines: the Chiltern Main Line, the Midland Main Line, and the West Coast Main Line.

The Northampton Loop branches off from the WCML at Blisworth Junction and has one station.

Future operations

High Speed 2 will pass through the south of the county,[2][3] however no stations will serve the new line.

Additionally a new rail freight terimal is being constructed outside of Northampton.[4]
