RfA

Hello. I've come across you at RC patrolling. I see you've done lots of vandal fighting and other useful things. Have you ever considered running for an adminship? If you want, I can nominate you. Regards, --Tone 14:03, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Deal. Just tell me when you fell you're ready, I'll be glad to nominate you. Regards, --Tone 14:08, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Warning users and reporting on WP:AIV

You need to warn users more than once before leaving them the final warning, especially when there have been no warning on their talk pages. Reporting them for vandalism after leaving a single warning on their talk page is considered newbie biting. I have reverted you on the Admin intervention against vandalism page. Please take note. Regards, — Nearly Headless Nick 15:02, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry about that, I just saw that he'd been given an "only warning", and so reported him when he vandalised again. Otherwise, what's the point of the "only warning" at all? In general, I don't even like the "only warning" (although I have used it once), and am always fair with vandals. But since it was clearly vandalism (diff), and not an honest mistake in any way, I don't really think it's biting the newbie. ConDemTalk 16:35, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, clearly vandalism. But, only vandalism. He was not trolling, neither was he vandalising userspace. We should be more tolerant than that with the vandals. It gets us new editors. I have this page on my watchlist, please respond here, if you wish to. Regards, — Nearly Headless Nick 14:08, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I do think in this case that i was a little trigger-happy with reporting this vandal. But while I accept the decision of an admin not to block a reported vandal (in this case, becuase there were too few warnings) I don't think that simply reporting them to admins is newbie-biting. Blocking a vandal early might be newbie-biting - but simply to report a vandal is to say "Hey, check this guy out, in my opinion he ought to be blocked". And that's not newbie-biting, it's bringing a vandal to the attention of admins. And bear in mind that in this case it wasn't actually my "only warning" anyway, and that I always give fair warning (well, apart from in this case) before reporting. (Eg User talk:68.199.211.132). I understand your concerns, though, and will continue to give adequate warning. ConDemTalk 01:42, 14 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No problemo

It happens a lot. Especially with the lag time in wikipedia right now. --Kukini 17:34, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

RE: Warning Vandals

Yea, that one must of slipped by. I've been trying to warn multiple vandals at once, that probably had something to do with it, thanks for the heads up, appreciate it. I'll be more careful from now on. Bmg916 02:26, 14 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Haha, it did have many sub-clauses but I definitely see where you're coming from, and I definitely agree. When people warn after my reverts I get really confused, and sometimes like I'm in a race to warn, lol. Bmg916 02:33, 14 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I put the cats in alphabetical order just because it's easier to see at a glance if a certain category is already in place, particularly when the list gets longer. I took out the "Mika" after the pipe because, as I understand it, that is just for sorting into the right order on the category page. As the title of the page is Mika (singer), the article will alrady come under "M" on category pages. It's only necessary to sort then when, for example, you have a first name and a surname. Then you can add "|Surname, First name" which will then put the article under the relevant letter on the category page for the surname. I hope that makes sense. Like I said, that's as far as I understand it, I could be wrong... Belovedfreak 18:40, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Random Redirect

Random ought to redirect to Randomness, but for some reason it redirects to Random (disambiguation). What's going on? ConDemTalk 20:39, 16 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like you got it right -- redirs to randomness when I look at it. Probably you ran into a cache issue, whether with the server or your browser. Editing redirects gets really tricky. :p – Luna Santin (talk) 20:44, 16 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, it's working now, thought it might be a cache problem, but thought I'd ask anyway. Thanks! ConDemTalk 20:47, 16 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. Love the block notice header. ConDemTalk 09:46, 19 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey. I'm just dropping you a message to thank you for the quick requested move action and for leaving me a note. I did not jump in the discussion, as I thought maybe I, as a Finn, had overestimed how well "Mika" is known as a name outside Finland and Japan, so I wanted to see other editors' thoughts first. Thanks, Prolog 22:12, 21 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • No worries. To be honest, I'm not absolutely sure about the move any more, mainly because of the Austrian band mentioned. The thing is, although there are many people called Mika, Mika (singer) is the only one known only as "Mika", rather than as Mika Something. It looks like it won't be moved now anyway, looking at the number of oppose votes! ConDemTalk 22:16, 21 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think it's dumbing down, it's just calling an encyclopedia article by the name most people will recognize. Please stick around and provide your opinion, so that all views can be represented... ConDemTalk 18:19, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

MI5

Nope, you're right, I meant to use either WP:NAME or WP:COMMONNAME, both of which support the most common form of a name. My addled brain defaulted to WP:UE, which is sort of tangentially similar if you stretch it really hard. Actually, I've been at (and lurking about) a few move requests, like arguments over whether foreign words should be translated into "normal talk", whether foreign names should be allowed to use "funny squiggles", and whose variety of English is better. Meh. What are you going to do. Thanks for the point-out, tho'. --SigPig |SEND - OVER 18:33, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Myachi

My message and responses copied from User talk:BrownsFanForLife

Hi there, please read my note at Talk:Myachi. Please don't take offense, but the copyright violation problem is extremely important, and so the information had to be removed. Also, some of it was written like an advert, rather than an encyclopedia article. I know you claim to be the founder of Myachi, but unfortunately any advert-like material put up by the company or representative is likely to be thought of as spam, and spam edits will be reverted. Continual spamming might result in a block. Anyway, Myachi might well be notable enough to be on Wikipedia - but this musn't be an advert or a how-to guide, but an encyclopedia article. ConDemTalk 03:30, 2 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What are you on about? I'm not the founder of Myachi, I'm just a fan. I'm giving credit to the actual founder of Myachi, Steve Ochs. He's the one that had the idea, he started Myachi. Everything on that page, at one point or another, came from him and his ideas. I said, don't delete my page and waste me hours of work. I don't even know how long I spent on that page, but you keep screwing me over, even after I asked you not to. I said, TELL ME, BEFORE DELETING THE FRICKING PAGE, what sounds "non-encyclopedic" and I would then fix it
Thanks for listening.... —The preceding unsigned comment was added by BrownsFanForLife (talkcontribs) 18:10, March 2, 2007 (UTC)
If you're so anal retentive about the Myachi page, why the heck don't you explain what I need to do, instead of shitting on me and deleting it every time? I'm new to wikipedia. I only signed up to fix up the Myachi page. I don't know what needs to be sourced and what doesn't, how/where to source something, or anything. You keep saying it sounds like an ad, but you never give an example. You just say something like "it." All of the information on it is from the same place, Steve Ochs. He founded Myachi, he wrote the history of it, pretty much. Some info may be from www.myachi.com, or from the flipbook that comes attached to each handsack, but it all stems from the same place - Steve Ochs and his company, Myachi Industries, Corp. There's no other source to mention except Ochs himself. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by BrownsFanForLife (talkcontribs) 01:47, March 3, 2007 (UTC)
Hi BrownsFanForLife. I'm sorry that my edits made you feel this way. I didn't remove the content to be annoying, or becuase I didn't like it, but because it was a copyright violation, and so had to be removed as soon as possible. For more information on copyright, see WP:CP. This generally means that it came word for word from another source - for example, the flip book. If this is the case, it can't be put up on wikipedia, because this would be violating copyright laws. Also, if it comes from the myachi website, it can't be put straight up here either, for the same reason. Don't forget that nothing on the page has been completely deleted - it's all in the page history, so you can always go back to the content that you added.
When I said that the page sounded like an advert, it's because it was a bit like the information had been written like it was meant to sell me a product, rather than teach me about it like an encyclopedia should. Take a look at WP:TONE to find out more. In essence, though, the article must sound like an encyclopedia article, rather than a how-to guide or an advertisement.
Sourcing is extremely important on Wikipedia. If you look at articles that have been around for a long time, like united States, you'll see that much of the information has a note in the Notes section. Information in Myachi must be sourced in the same way. If it came from a website, like Myachi's own website, then it must be cited. See Wikipedia:Citing sources for more info.
I hope this is helpful. At no point was I "shitting on you", or being anal about the page - it's just that the information under copyright had to be removed, even before telling you about it. If you look at the article's talk page, you'll see that I did give an example of the conent that was unencyclopedic. Remeber that the page doesn't belong to anybody, not even you or me, and so you can't ask to be contacted before any changes are made.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask me on my talk page (in a civil manner). Again, I'm sorry about the way my edits made you feel, but please don't take offense. Content on wikipedia that breaks copyright laws - that is, stuff that's word-for-word from somewhere else - has to be removed immediately.
Also, remember to sign all your posts on talk pages with four tildes, like this: ~~~~. This will produce your username, and the time of your post. Feel free to ask me any questions, ConDemTalk 18:12, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thanks... I did, as you said, state that much, if not all, of the information was from the Myachi website, although it isn't word-for-word. The main source is Ochs and/or Myachi and/or the website, but the only thing copied verbatim was the "Myachi in a Nutshell" section, for which I took info from the flipbook. Now does any of this info that wasn't copied word-for-word still need to be properly sourced and all, or should I just rewrite the page without any verbatim copies? BrownsFanForLife 00:46, 4 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again. Basically, all information should be properly sourced. Some of the information - like the "Myachi in a nutshell" - isn't really suitable for wikipedia, because it's more of a "how-to guide" than an encyclopedia, and so can be left out. The rest of the information should be properly sourced, like it says on Wikipedia:Citing sources. So basically, it can't be word-for-word copying, and must be sourced. Go ahead and add it in, and I'll try and help out by changing it to Wikipedia style. ConDemTalk 01:00, 4 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thanks... I'm just lost in the sauce as to how/where/what to source... What to write, where to write it, all of that. I had looked at an article or two about it but there's so much, it's hard to find what I need. BrownsFanForLife 02:23, 4 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The easiest way to do it is probably with embedded citations, just adding the web address of the place you got the info in between square brackets after the piece of information. ConDemTalk 02:41, 4 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks!
