Strandhill, Ireland

Strandhill (Irish: An Leathros: meaning CAKE-TOWN) is a seaside resort village in County Sligo, Ireland[1].

Strandhill is situated at the western base of Knocknarea on the 'Cúil Irra' peninsula, and is Atlantic facing. The area is a well known surfing destination and is amongst Ireland's premiere surfing resorts due to its strong beach break.

Amenities at Strandhill includes a 18 hole golf course, caravan park, pubs, restaurants and a Seaweed bath house. It is also the site of Sligo Airport. The resort is popular with residents of Sligo which is located approximately 7km (4 miles) to the east.

A number of new housing developments have taken place in Strandhill since 2000, especially along the R292 (the 'top road' locally).

The village has a long and exciting history from producing the first nightclub for cross dressing Vikings a week after their invasion to being raised to the ground seventeen times. Currently the village is spreading like a bad rash, with estates popping up at a rate of four per day.

Local trivia

Water samples taken from the popular surf resort have been tested and apparently cause Erectile dysfunction, sphincter paralysis, memory loss, motor skills upheaval, extreme paranoia coupled with low self esteem which will result in the sufferer believing nobody important is out to get them.

Famous Locals

The village is home to a number of celebrities. Tony Bennett, John O Shea and US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice are but a few famous names that have taken up residence in one of the many thousand estates that litter the landscape.

Village Focal Points

The cannon that sits facing the oncoming surf is a testament to the villages opinion towards pirates and the roasters that live in Beltra and those surrounding areas. Ironically it is a landmark that juxtaposes the old attitude to the new which involves teaching the 'foreign folk' to surf, giving the 'foreign folk' smoothies, selling the 'foreign folk' pints of the black stuff in the local pub.

Local Traditions

Warriors Run: Every year the fittest and fastest runners from the vast metropolis that is Strandhill congregate at the aforementioned cannon and leg it up the side of Knocknarea. They are chased by frustrated single women who are 'out for a husband' and are armed with hurleys, seven irons and flails. The first woman to bring a runner to ground and subdue him, can commandeer a go kart and transport her quarry to the finish line followed by the local church where Father Maxi will pronounce them husband and wife. The race has been won ten years running by a local woman who has amassed a massive eleven husbands.

Local Sayings

'Ooooh jaysus' 'Go'way!' 'Howrya gettin on?' 'Are ya going for a pint?' 'Gnarley man' 'Kowabunga dude' 'The surf is up and is looking radical'
