Usage

Placement

Insert the template at the top of the article — above the introduction or lead section, but below any maintenance tags, such as {{mergefrom}} or {{Unreferenced}} — using the "Cut-and-paste text" below. See the table at the bottom of this page for an explanation of the various parameters, and formatting advice.

Guide to parameters

REQUIRED parameters — must have a value entered.
Parameter Explanation
Name Commonly-used Anglophone version of the subject's name — generally identical to the article's title.
Title Default value = "composer", but one could substitute another description, e.g. "Songwriter" or "Composer-conductor";
Displays at top of box, immediately below Name.
Life_color sets the background color for the Name and the "Life" heading. Default value ("PowderBlue") is provided, but one may substitute another color if desired.
Work_color sets the background color for Title, and the "Work" heading. Default value ("PaleGoldenrod") is provided, but one may substitute another color if desired.

OPTIONAL parameters — delete any parameters that are not applicable, too narrow, etc.
Parameter Explanation
Nationality Enter the composer's nationality — could be as narrow as Viennese or as broad as European;
Displays at top of box as modifier to Title — use the adjectival form.
These parameters apply to an image of the subject, if available.
Img Enter *.jpg or other image name;
Omit the namespace identifier (Image:) from image name;
Do not enclose image name in brackets (i.e. omit "[[" and "]]").
Img_capt Enter a caption for the image. Try to include the date of the portrait and the name of the artist or photographer.
Img_size Image size, only if it is smaller than 220 pixels width. Do not use "px" after specifying the size.
Landscape Enter the value yes when using wide, short images. The image height (rather than width) will be limited to 200 pixels. Otherwise delete this parameter.
These parameters provide info on the subject's lifespan, family, etc.
They appear under the header "Life".
Birth_name Use only if different from name in header
Also_known_as Enter any commonly used aliases or nicknames
Born Enter birth date and place information using the format: [date]
[place] ;
Please do not insert flag icons — they are often anachronistic or otherwise inaccurate, and may break the template;
Link dates as appropriate, per WP:DATE;
Use approximations or ranges for dates where appropriate;
Use the templates {{Birth date}} or {{Birth date and age}} as appropriate.
Baptized Use as a substitute for the Born parameter where appropriate; use the same format as above.
Died Enter death date and place information, using the same format as in Born;
Use the template {{Death date and age}} as appropriate.
Flourished Use as a substitute for Born and Died where appropriate.
Notable_family e.g. the Mendelssohns, the Gabrieli's, the Bach's, etc. Link only family notable enough to merit a Wikipedia article.
These parameters provide info on the subject's music & career.
They appear under the header "Work".
Idiom i.e. where the composer's works would likely be filed in a record store;
Delete this parameter for most composers of the 19th Century and earlier;
Displays in box as "Commonly classified as..." [value];
This parameter accepts only the following values: Classical, Jazz, Folk, Popular, Theater/Film, or Experimental.
Idiom2 and Idiom3 Same as Idiom — use for "eclectic" or "crossover" composers, e.g. Leonard Bernstein.
Historical_era e.g. Renaissance, Baroque, etc.
Styles/schools Any stylistic label(s), school(s), or movement(s) commonly associated with the composer;
e.g. Franco-Flemish school, Verismo, Les Six, Futurism, Bebop, etc.
Teachers One or two notable (notable enough to merit their own Wikipedia article) people with whom the subject studied extensively.
Students One or two notable composers or others (notable enough to merit their own Wikipedia article) who studied extensively with the subject
Collaborators Notable collaborators. e.g. Boito for Verdi, Diaghilev for Stravinsky, Peter Sellars for John Adams, etc;
List only those who worked extensively with the composer, and who are notable enough in their own right to merit a Wikipedia article.
Employers/patrons e.g. the Roman Catholic church; the Hapsburg monarchy, etc. (for those composers strongly associated with a particular employer/patron)
Other_occupations e.g. "Pianist" for Liszt, "Insurance agent" for Ives, etc.
Principal_genres e.g. "Opera" for Verdi; "Symphony, Song" for Mahler, etc.;
Delete parameter for more wide-ranging composers.
Notable_works List one or two works on which the subject's fame rests;
Primarily for "one-(or two-)hit wonders", rather than for more prolific composers;
For example, an infobox for Engelbert Humperdinck might list Hänsel und Gretel in this parameter.
