Detox is the title of the upcoming third and most likely final album by Dr. Dre. The album is stated to be released in September 2007. It was originally due for release in Autumn 2004, but was not completed. There have also been rumors that the famous producer had completed the album some time back but was not satisfied with it, and instead sold the beats to former Aftermath Entertainment artist The Game. Dr. Dre wanted to concentrate on producing artists that were on his Aftermath label, such as 50 Cent, Busta Rhymes, Eminem, and Eve, which is why it has taken so long for the album to be confirmed.[1]

History

Dr. Dre first mentioned the Detox album to the press around 2000, and since that time various producers and vocalists have contributed with potential tracks. In January 2004 co-producer Scott Storch listed guest appearances by the following artists: Eminem, Snoop Dogg, The Game, 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks, Papoose, Knoc-turn'al, and Guvner.[2] Aftermath-affiliated producers Hi-Tek, Kon Artis, Nottz, and Mahogany are also working with Dr. Dre for the album.[3] On Just Blaze's MySpace page, there is a photo of Just Blaze, Dr. Dre, and The D.O.C., with the caption "No really... watch out for Detox". This seems to confirm that Just Blaze will be a guest producer on the upcoming album, and The D.O.C. will be a performer.[4] When asked about Detox by DubCNN, Devin the Dude claimed to have accepted an invitation to record for the album.[5] In an interview with DonKilluminati.com, Bishop Lamont said that he recorded vocals for some potential Detox tracks, and that Mel-Man had co-produced some tracks.[1] Mike Elizondo has recorded bass guitar parts for the album.[6] An interview with Billboard revealed that Jonathan Rotem will be producing for the album.[7] Dawaun Parker states that he will also be producing for the album.[8] Jay-Z has also stated that he has worked with Dr. Dre for Detox.[9]

At one point, Dr. Dre had intended for Detox to be a concept album. In an interview with MTV in 2002, Dr. Dre explained that "I'm not talking about lowriders and blunts and all that anymore... I mean, that's played. As a matter of fact, I'm tired of hearing other people talk about it, to tell you the truth... I had to come up with something different but still keep it hardcore, so what I decided to do was make my album one story about one person and just do the record through a character's eyes, and everybody that appears on my album is going to be a character, so it's basically going to be a hip-hop musical".[10] It is unknown whether or not this approach to the album is still what Dr. Dre has in plan.

According to a Sirius Radio interview early in 2007,[citation needed] Timbaland stated that he produced a track or two for Detox in turn for Dr. Dre's appearance on Timbaland Presents: Shock Value. On February 18, 2007, Dr. Dre called in to L.A. radio station Power 106 to discuss Detox. He announced that the album is to be released in 2007, although he is not certain on the month, and stated that he has completed 18 potential tracks for the album, but that the final album would only include 12 to 13. Dr. Dre also mentioned that upstarts Bishop Lamont and Slim the Mobster will be featured on it, and that he would like to include anyone he has ever worked with.[11] RZA also recently confirmed he has co-produced a track with Dr. Dre that featured Marsha Ambrosius from Floetry, which may or may not be on Detox.[citation needed] 50 Cent recently called Pow Radio and said that he recorded two tracks for Detox.[citation needed] Dr. Dre has confirmed that the intro is called "Intervention".[12]

Album references in music

There have been numerous references to the anticipated album on tracks by musical artists.

  • Bishop Lamont:
    • Aftermath-signed artist Bishop Lamont tells people to "Look out for Detox" in "Up & Down" from his upcoming album, The Reformation.[13]
  • Busta Rhymes:
    • On Busta Rhymes' (another Aftermath label-mate) latest single, "I'm Just Getting Warm", he raps "Hit you with a banger like a beat from the Detox".
  • Crooked I:
    • Los Angeles rapper Crooked I is apparently doing ghostwriting for Dr. Dre on Detox. A song has been leak titled "Say Dr. Dre" that has Crooked I rapping in first person from the point of view of Dr. Dre (as if he were Dr. Dre).
  • Eminem:
    • At the end of "Encore", the last track on Eminem's album Encore, Eminem tells listeners "Don't worry about that Detox album. It's coming. We gonna make Dre do it".
  • Hood Surgeon:
    • On Hood Surgeon's (Dr. Dre's son) song "Paradise" from his mixtape The Autopsy, he raps "Can't even call this the Detox, 'cause my hits rock".
  • Snoop Dogg:
    • Snoop Dogg makes reference to the upcoming album with the line "if my nigga's detoxin' there's more for me" on the track "Boss' Life" on his 2006 album, Tha Blue Carpet Treatment.

    • In his freestyle "Young California", from You Know What It Is Vol. 2, The Game raps "The 4th quarter belongs to me, scratch Detox, Dre sold his songs to me".
    • On the track "Higher", from The Game's debut album The Documentary, Dr. Dre tells people to "look out for Detox" in his one line in the song.
    • On the track "Get Your Money Right" from the mixtape DJ Exclusive & Aftermath Present Dr. Dre - Dretox, The Game says, "I'm classic like Detox or Blueprint 2".
    • Furthermore, on his second album, Doctor's Advocate, track thirteen, "California Vacation", The Game refers to his album as "a sneak peek at the motherfucking Detox".
    • He also makes reference to the album on the track "Compton" from Doctor's Advocate, in which he raps, "I'm the reason Dre feels comfortable retiring. I just might put out Detox myself. Smoke so much, I check in detox myself".
    • On the track "120 Bars" from Stop Snitchin, Stop Lyin The Game says "You a steroid addict, you need detox, hopefully you make it out in time to be on Detox".
    • On "Feels Good" (produced by Dr. Dre, recorded for Doctor's Advocate), The Game raps "Tell the Doc I'm sick. Before Detox, let me take my last chronic hit".
