The Suite Life of Zack & Cody is an American children's television series that airs on the Disney Channel. This Disney Channel Original Series premiered on March 18, 2005, and was one of the first five shows available on the iTunes Store.[1]

The series stars Dylan and Cole Sprouse. They play Cody and Zack Martin, identical twins, whose single mother, Carey, has a gig as headlining singer at the Tipton Hotel. Now they live in a five-star hotel in Boston as a provision of her contract.

The popularity of the series has spawned two video games: one for the Nintendo DS entitled The Suite Life of Zack & Cody: Tipton Trouble[2] and a titular release for the Game Boy Advance.[3] The show was originally called The Suite Life, which is co-created by Danny Kallis, who was a writer, producer, and director for the TV series, Smart Guy; and Jim Geoghan, who was a writer and producer for the TV series, Family Matters. [4]

The series is the third Disney Channel Original to have gone over the 65 episode limit, the first was That's So Raven going to 100 episodes and the second was Kim Possible.

Main characters

Zackary "Zack" Martin (Dylan Sprouse) is always getting into trouble. Zack is usually dressed in skater clothes. He often sets out to get exactly what he wants. He has a preoccupation with girls, and a crush on Maddie in Season 1 and occasionally in Season 2. He occasionally sticks up for his brother, as seen in the episodes Election and Kept Man . He wants to be like his dad. Other than in wood shop, he is known for not doing very well in school.

Cody Martin (Cole Sprouse) is the intellectual, mature, and sensitive twin, but he often plays along with his brother's schemes. He shows less interest in girls than his brother. He has shown a passion for baking, cleaning, and cooking, as well as mime and dance. Cody is portrayed as easily frightened, but has a meaner side, portrayed in the episode "French 101". Other than woodshop Cody is known for doing well in school.

Madeline "Maddie" Fitzpatrick (Ashley Tisdale) is the attractive, teenage candy-counter girl at the Tipton Hotel, a cashier at the Cluck Bucket, and manages the Camp Tipton Daycare Center. While it appears that she comes from a lower class family, Maddie is very hard-working (she aspires to attend law school), outspoken, and intelligent. She attends a private school at Our Lady of Perpetual Sorrow. Maddie is London's closest friend, though London often treats her like a servant, as in Footloser, usually bribing her with money. Maddie also babysits Zack and Cody. Zack had a huge crush on her in season one, but seemed to have moved on in most season two episodes.

London Tipton, (Brenda Song) is the daughter of Wilfred Tipton, the owner of the Tipton Hotel. London is a dim-witted, spoiled, rich teenager with her own private suite at the Tipton, complete with a large closet (with its own talking mirror) and a kitchen which takes up most of the floor. Moreover, she claims that everything that she has worn, including her diapers, were made by famous designers. London's best friend is Maddie. She transferred to the same private school as Maddie in the episode Forever Plaid, due to poor attendance at her old school. She dislikes her step-moms and talks to Mr. Moseby and Maddie about her problems. When happy she usually claps her hands repeatedly while saying her catchphrase "Yay me!" She can be very ignorant about simple things such as thinking her father's first name was "Adamant" when Mr. Moseby said that her father was acting adamant about a situation. London often mentions her frenemy Portia Tenenbaum. Though it seems like London may lead the ultimate rich-girl life, her childhood was not perfect - her dad was almost always away on business, so she was never able to get close to her own family. London Tipton is a parody of Paris Hilton, which is mentioned in Forever Plaid when her teacher says "I'm talking to the spoiled hotel heiress." London responds by saying "Is Paris Hilton in this class?."

Marion Moseby (Phill Lewis) is the somewhat-uptight manager of the Tipton, who speaks with a wide vocabulary and an urbane vernacular but is often annoyed by the twin's schemes. Though he acts as though he does not care about the boys, he actually has a great deal of affection for them and acts as a father figure. In the episode The Ghost of 613, it is revealed that he started out at the Tipton as a bellhop back in the 1970s.

Carey Marie Martin (Kim Rhodes) is a headlining singer at the Tipton as well as the mother of Zack and Cody. She is a divorced mother, wise, kind, but somewhat aggressive towards the twins when they misbehave. She seems to love the twins a lot. Arwin Quentin Hawkhauser has a crush on her, revealed in the episode The Prince & The Plunger, and she has a younger sister, as mentioned in Moseby's Big Brother. She often dreams about George Clooney. Carey found her talent for singing by mistake when she was at a talent show doing stand-up comedy, stated in the episode Footloser. She tries to keep the boys away from trouble, but she never prevails.

Minor Characters

Settings

Tipton Hotel

A front view of the Tipton

The Tipton Hotel is where Zack, Cody, Carey, and London all live, and where the majority of the other major characters in the series work. It is the main setting for the series, particularly the basement, the Tipton's 5-star restaurant, the lobby, the game room, the Martins' suite on the 23rd floor, and London Tipton's penthouse.

Buckner Middle School

During the second season, the series has started using the younger characters' schools as locations. Zack and Cody attend Buckner Middle School and their school team is the Badgers as revealed in the episode "Election" and "Nurse Zack".

Our Lady of Perpetual Sorrow Catholic School

Maddie, London, Corrie, and Mary Margaret attend the Catholic School - Our Lady of Perpetual Sorrow.

Other Places in Boston

Scenes also take place in several other places in Boston, including Fenway Park, a movie theater, Maddie's Home, the local shopping mall, a bowling alley, a miniature golf course, and Liberty Park, the park across the street from the Tipton Hotel.

Trivia

  • The Martins' suite is complete with a kitchen and a bedroom, but so far no other suites with a kitchen have been shown (apart from London's, whose ridiculously large closet has been seen and mentioned several times).
  • Almost all of the primary cast of High School Musical have appeared on the show, except for Corbin Bleu, Olesya Rulin, and Lucas Grabeel.
  • In the episode "Back In the Game", Mr. Moseby does the same acting warm-up as seen in High School Musical as Ashley Tisdale and Lucas Grabeel's characters did before their performance of 'Bop to the Top'.
  • In the episode "Bowling", Arwin's mother's is the voice of Estelle Harris, who also plays Muriel. It is the only "appearence" of Estelle Harris in season two. Also in this episode the exterior of the bowling alley is the same one used in the Hannah Montana episode "People Who Use People". However, the setting of Hannah Montana is in Malibu, while the suite life of Zack and Cody is in Boston

Running Gags

  • London is known for being an airhead and loving herself and her money. She also says "Yay Me!" while clapping in almost every episode. In one episode, she said to Maddie, "Yay You!" Maddie replies by saying, "London, you've never yayed anybody but yourself." This is not true. In another episode, London said "Yay Daddy!"
  • London (and sometimes others) mistake tattered, old clothing for Maddie's
  • Maddie is seen--and constantly referred to by London--as "poor".
  • London often waves and says "I'm rich."
  • London's rich friend Portia Tenenbaum (with whom London competes with for more fame, money, and clothes) is only seen in a few episodes.
  • Zack and Cody's classmate Agnes, who is somewhat of a pest to them, often switches between crushing on Cody and crushing on Zack.
  • In many episodes, Carrie tries to teach the boys a lesson by telling them a story about one of her past boyfriends. She often begins with, "You know, I had a boyfriend once..." and the first time she told them one was in Band in Boston.
  • George Clooney is often mentioned by Carey in some way.
  • Arwin has usually invented a wacky device that ends up failing.
  • Esteban carries 1 or more heavy bags and damages his back in many episodes.
  • One particular vase in the Tipton lobby is frequently knocked off its table; Mr. Moseby always saves it from breaking with a diving catch.
  • In almost every scene where Zack and Cody are in the air vents with someone else, one person says "It smells in here," then the other person says, "Sorry."
  • Max played by Alyson Stoner is often mistaken as a boy in the first season.
  • Moseby's catchphrase for a ludicrous situation: "Good luck with that."
  • A running gag in the show, involves London saying to someone in a cute manner, (usually Maddie, Arwin, or Esteban) "What'cha doin'?". And they reply with a long, complicated answer, causing London to repeat, "What'cha doin'?" in the same cute manner.
  • Mr.Moseby saying something weird or mean and a guest hears him then he says something back.

Theme song

The theme song for The Suite Life of Zack and Cody is called "Here I Am" and was written by John Adair and Steve Hampton, who also wrote the theme song for Phil of the Future. It was sung by Loren Ellis and The Drew Davis Band. The original theme song was going to be "Grow Up" by Simple Plan. However, it was changed to "Here I Am" at the last minute.[citation needed]
