Bond 22 is the working title of a future EON Productions' James Bond film to follow the 2006 film, Casino Royale. It will be the 22nd official film in the James Bond franchise and the second to star Daniel Craig as Ian Fleming's British secret agent, James Bond. The film will be produced by Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, and directed by Marc Forster. The film will be released worldwide by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer & Columbia Pictures. Originally scheduled for a May 2 2008 release,[1] it has been pushed back to November 7 2008 to give the producers more time to complete the film.[2]

Pre-production work on Bond 22 was already under way before filming of Casino Royale began in January 2006, according to an announcement by Michael G. Wilson during a news conference in London on October 14 2005. In a November 17, 2006 interview with the BBC it was confirmed that Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, who had previously written the screenplays for The World Is Not Enough, Die Another Day, and Casino Royale, would also be working on Bond 22. Paul Haggis will be returning to work on the script as well.[3]

Premise

Broccoli confirmed that Bond 22 would be a continuation of Casino Royale. Daniel Craig may have hinted at the direction of Bond 22 when he stated that the events of Casino Royale would lead Bond to "go out for revenge".[4] If true, Bond 22 would be the first true 007 sequel (previous films have been linked, such as Dr. No and From Russia With Love or On Her Majesty's Secret Service and Diamonds Are Forever, but this would be the first original sequel). It is also rumored that the main villain of the story is Vesper's French-Algerian boyfriend.

At the end of the book, Bond on Set: Filming Casino Royale when filming the last scene of Casino Royale in which Mr. White (Jesper Christensen) is shot in the leg by Bond, Daniel Craig says, "This is the last scene in the movie and I wanted to show that Bond means business. We don't know if he kills this guy. We certainly suspect that he is going to extract some information from him."

Cast

Eva Green has stated in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that Vesper's French-Algerian boyfriend mentioned in Casino Royale may be the villain in Bond 22. It is also possible she may return in a flashback/video scene.[7]

Giancarlo Giannini told Italian newspaper il Giornale that he will be reprising his role of René Mathis from Casino Royale. He further disclosed that Mathis will be revealed to be an ally of James Bond, and will use his status as a double agent to help Bond find who Mr. White and Le Chiffre worked for.[6] Writers Purvis and Wade have stated that it is unlikely that Q will make a return after his absence in Casino Royale. However, Miss Moneypenny may make a return.[8]

Production

A July 2006 report by The Hollywood Reporter stated that Bond 22 would be based on an original idea by producer Michael G. Wilson who previously co-scripted every official Bond film of the 1980s, For Your Eyes Only (1981) through Licence to Kill (1989), and that they are looking for a writer to adapt. Roger Michell, known for directing Notting Hill, was said to be in contract negotiations to direct, per reports by the Daily Mail and The Hollywood Reporter.[9] However, Variety reported that negotiations had fallen through.[10] Michell, who had previously worked with Daniel Craig on Enduring Love and The Mother, cited shooting the film so soon as his reason for walking out.[11] Michell later stated that the script was the main reason for the split, "We couldn’t find a way of making us all happy with the script. It’s been through various drafts, but I just decided to say no before I got too far into it". [12] Replying to reports that he was offered $8m to helm the film, Michell stated that "it wasn’t quite $8 million but it was a lot of money. It was because in the end I didn’t feel comfortable with the Bond process, and I was very nervous that there was a start date but really no script at all. And I like to be very well prepared as a director." [13]

Before coming onboard Bond 22 in the script department, Paul Haggis also revealed that he was offered the job of directing Daniel Craig's second outing as 007, but turned it down.[14] Four helmers met producers in May 2007 to pitch for the Bond 22 directors chair: Marc Forster, Tony Scott, Alex Proyas, and Jonathan Mostow.[15] In June 2007, Marc Forster was confirmed as the director of Bond 22.[16] Production will be based at Bond's spiritual home of Pinewood Studios in the UK and will use the newly rebuilt 007 Stage along with other soundstages on the lot. Shooting is scheduled to start in January 2008.[17] The Swiss Alps will also be a location.[18]

Soundtrack

On November 9, 2006 Amy Winehouse announced she had been approached by one of the producers of the James Bond movies to sing the main theme of Bond 22.[19]

Vehicles and gadgets

Aston Martin may not be supplying James Bond's new car in the film due to Ford's selling the company in March 2007.[20] Ford has a three-film deal that began with 2002's Die Another Day. Jaguar is speculated to be a replacement with the new Jaguar C-XF design.[21] This has itself been put into question as Ford has announced their intention to sell Jaguar also.[22] BMW has stated that the studios have come to them and requested the use of a heavily modified BMW F01 7 Series (which is due for a 2009 release),[citation needed] possibly because Bond films are known to feature pre-release car models.[citation needed] If this happens, this would be the first time since The World is Not Enough to feature a BMW.

Video game adaptation

In May 2006 Activision acquired non-exclusive rights to develop and publish James Bond games; an exclusive deal with Activision takes effect in September 2007. During an earnings report, Bobby Kotick, the CEO of Activision, announced that their first Bond game would be released in May 2008.[23] Previously it was reported by Variety that Activision's first game may be a tie-in to Bond 22.[24] Due to Bond 22's delay, it is likely this game will also be delayed until November of 2008.
