The RER C is one of the five lines in the RER urban rail system serving the Île-de-France région, notably Paris and its agglomeration.
The line runs from Pontoise (C1), Versailles – Rive Gauche (C5) and Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines (C7) to Massy-Palaiseau (C2), Dourdan-la-Forêt (C4), Saint-Martin d'Étampes (C6) and Versailles – Chantiers (C8)
- First inauguration : 1979
- Length : 185.6 km (115.3 miles)
- Number of stops : 84
Line C was created in 1979 by connecting the Gare d'Orsay railway terminus (now Musée d'Orsay) with the Invalides terminus of the Rive Gauche line to Versailles, along the banks of the Seine. In 1988 the Argenteuil branch opened, using most of the infrastructure of the old SNCF Auteuil line and connecting to the line's main trunk at Champ de Mars-Tour Eiffel via a curved bridge (the only one in Paris) over the Seine river.
Chronology
- September 26th, 1979 : Inauguration of RER C, Versailles-Rive Gauche – Invalides – Quai-d'Orsay, branching to Massy – Palaiseau, and Juvisy - Dourdan / St-Martin d'Étampes, after the construction of a new 1-km tunnel connecting the Gare d'Orsay to the Gare des Invalides.
- May 1980 : Service extended St-Quentin-en-Yvelines – Versailles – Chantiers - Gare des Invalides.
- September 25th, 1988 : Opening of VMI ("Vallée de Montmorency - Invalides") branch to northwest, to Montigny-Beauchamp and Argenteuil. Connection across Paris uses "ligne d'Auteuil" (incorporated into the "ligne de petite ceinture" from 1867, closed to passengers from 1934 July 22), and new tunnel connection Batignolles - St-Ouen, 3 km.
- September 29th, 1991 : New station, Porte de Clichy, opened. Located between Pereire-Levallois and St-Ouen.
- 1992 : The line is extended from Juvisy to Versailles.
- August 28th, 2000 : The line is extended from Montigny-Beauchamp to Pontoise, 9 km.
- August 28th, 2000 : New station, Bibliothèque François Mitterrand, opened in order to create a new connexion with Métro Line 14. Located between Paris-Austerlitz and Boulevard Masséna (which was closed and replaced by the new station).
- March 24th, 2002 : New station, St-Ouen-l'Aumône-Liesse, opened. Located between Pierrelaye and St-Ouen-l'Aumône.
- August 27th, 2006 : C3 branch (from Ermont-Eaubonne to Argenteuil) transferred to Transilien Paris – Saint-Lazare suburban rail network.
- December 16th, 2006 : Boulevard Victor is renamed Boulevard Victor - Pont du Garigliano for the arrival of the tramway line T3.
