Disturbia is a 2007 thriller film from DreamWorks Pictures, starring Shia LaBeouf as a depressed teen placed under house arrest who thinks he witnesses a murder while spying on his suspicious neighbor, believing he is a murderer. The film is a loose modern translation of the Alfred Hitchcock classic Rear Window and was released with a PG-13 rating by the MPAA.

Plot

The film starts out with teenage boy Kale (Shia LaBeouf) and his father on a fishing trip. As they drive home, they get into a car accident, which results in the death of Kale's father. A year later, Kale becomes enraged over his Spanish teacher's remarks about his father and hits him in the face. As punishment, Kale is sentenced to three months of house arrest, wearing an ankle monitor.

Due to boredom, Kale becomes a voyeur and starts watching his neighbors with binoculars, especially the hot girl next door, with his best friend Ronnie (Aaron Yoo). Kale becomes increasingly friendly with his attractive new neighbor, Ashley (Sarah Roemer). Along with this, they find out about the cheating husband and maid across the street, the annoying little porn watching boys next door and his mysteriously shy neighbor.

Kale hears a TV news report which states that the local police are looking for a serial killer who may be driving a blue 1960s Ford Mustang with a dented side and who may be from Austin, Texas as he plays his PSP. When Kale observes another neighbor, Robert Turner (David Morse), backing such a car into his garage, he becomes suspicious.

At first, both Ashley and Ronnie think Kale is delusional because of his long times of solitude, but gradually become involved in Kale's suspicions when they spy a female visitor at Turner's home who appears to be running half naked from him in the house. Kale and Ronnie arrange to break into his car, and eventually his house, in search of clues. Using Ashley as a tail at the store watching the neighbor, Kale relays info to Ronnie as he gets into Bothered by their interest in him, knowing that its them, the suspected killer confronts Ashley in the parking lot of a store, requesting respect for his privacy. They call the police after finding a smelling plastic bag, which seems to contain a corpse. However, as Turner shows the police and the children, it is the corpse of a deer he hit with his car.

By the time Kale, Ashley and Ronnie have proof that he is the serial killer, they have placed themselves and Kale's mother, Julie in grave danger. When Julie goes over to Turner's house to convince him not to press charges against Kale for breaking and entering, Turner attacks her after acting as the friendly caring neighbor. Turner goes to Kale's house and then hits Ronnie with a baseball bat, knocking him out and tapes Kale to a chair. He tries to make it seem that Kale is the killer, making it seem like he was seeking revenge against his Ronnie for calling his girlfriend, and his mother because she kept on telling him she was disappointed in him. However, with Ashley's help Kale escapes and goes to Turner's house to search for his mother. Ashleys leaves to call the police, but for some reason, they never arrive. It was not Guitierz He finds her, along with Turner hidden behind her. Just as he cuts her down from the roofing, Turner attacks Kale. Kale's mother pushes Turner down just as he is about to stab Kale, allowing him to basically shove and scissor him with a giant pair of shears.

Afterwards, Kale is released from the rest of his time under house arrest for what is referred to as "good behavior". The film ends with a scene that shows Kale, Ronnie, Ashley and Julie alive and well.

Reception

Disturbia opened at #1 in its first week at the box office with $23 million and it stayed at #1 the following two weeks with $13 and $9 million respectively. As of Sunday June 24th, 2007, the film has grossed approximately $95 million worldwide. Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a "fresh" score of 67% and an average rating of 7.3/10, stating that Disturbia is a "tense, subtle thriller with a noteworthy performance from Shia LaBeouf".[1] It is considered a huge financial success with respect to its small production budget of only $20 million and talk of a sequel has already begun, however there have been no confirmed reports and none of the cast have signed on.^[1]^[2]^[3]^[4]^[5]

DVD

According to Davisdvd.com, the film will be released on DVD, August 7, 2007. Trivia

Kale's last name in the movie, Brecht, is the name of a famous 20th century German poet and dramatist, Bertold Brecht.

Is inspired by the Alfred Hitchcock film Rear Window.

The poster for this film bears some striking, and probably intentional, resemblences to the poster for its predecessor Rear Window.

The film also bears resemblence to The Simpsons episode Bart of Darkness, which in itself is a parody of Rear Window.
