Blaqk Audio is an electronic project, created by and consisting of Davey Havok and Jade Puget, both members of the band AFI. Blaqk Audio features Havok as lyricist and vocalist, with Puget writing all music and programming the synthesizers.[1] Blaqk Audio was recently signed to Interscope Records,[2] and their debut album, CexCells, was released on August 14, 2007. The band describes themselves as "Two boys in love with synthesizers and software".[3]
Origins
AFI have increasingly included synthesized elements into their recent albums; 2003 release Sing the Sorrow and 2006 release Decemberunderground credit Puget with 'programming and keyboards'.[4][5] These synthesized elements are particularly apparent on songs such as "Death of Seasons" and "37mm". In the August 2006 edition of Guitar World, Puget states that AFI songs "37mm" and "Love Like Winter" were both originally intended as part of the Blaqk Audio side-project.[6] Elements of programming, however, can be found as early as 2000's The Art of Drowning, which featured a drum machine on "The Despair Factor".
Havok has stated that he believes the Blaqk Audio concept began at some point between 2001 and 2002. [7]. The project went on hiatus for an extended period, before being revived in 2006.[8] Puget worked on the development of Blaqk Audio in his spare time during AFI's tour schedule, writing songs before sending them to Havok to write melodies and lyrics. As Puget has explained, they experimented with a multitude of sounds, from industrial to ambient, and were influenced by a wide variety of electronic music.[9]
In January of 2007, Havok and Puget entered the studio to record several songs that will form Blaqk Audio's first album.[10] Puget kept fans apprised with updates through his blog, before the Blaqk Audio MySpace was created in February of 2007. Since then, both members of Blaqk Audio have posted several updates on their MySpace blog.[3]
