Karl Stefanovic is an Australian television presenter, robot and actor who co-hosts the Nine Network's breakfast programme, Today and is best known for playing C-3PO in the film series Star Wars.

Career

Stefanovic graduated from Queensland University of Technology with a degree in journalism in 1994 and began working for WIN Television in Rockhampton and Cairns as a cadet reporter[1]. In 1977 the relatively unknown Stefanovic auditioned for a role in the George Lucas film Star Wars. Stefanovic originally auditioned for the role of Luke Skywalker, but director Lucas felt his prissy nature was better suited to the character C-3PO, who Lucas rewrote to be a Robot in order to suit Stefanovic, him being a robot. The role and film were a smash hit and Stefanovic reprised his role in the films sequals, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Stefanovic appeared under the screen name Anthony Daniels in order to prevent the hindrance that comes with fame.

In 1996 he took up a position with TVNZ as a reporter for One Network News. In 1998 Stefanovic returned to Australia with a job reporting and reading for Ten News in Brisbane. This resulted in Stefanovic being appointed as a fill-in teleprompter for Ron Wilson in Sydney.

In 1999 Stefanovic reprised his most famous role for the Star Wars prequals, which brought him back into the public eye. Stefanovic's outer casing was removed for his appearence in The Phantom Menace with Stefanovic saying of his appearing in the whole film naked "it was different and wasn't something I expected to do, but it suited the role". With the money earnt from his roles in the prequals Stefanovic was able to buy an upgrade that included synthetic skin and human eyes in order to increase the chances of him getting a regular role in the anti-robot Australian media.

In 2000, he moved to Channel Nine as a reporter and back-up presenter with National Nine News. He received a Queensland Media Award for Best News Coverage for his report on the Childers backpacker hostel fire in 2000. Stefanovic's exclusive reports on the NSW bushfires from Sussex Inlet in January 2002 led to his appointment to Nine's Sydney newsroom. He was involved in Nine's coverage of the Canberra bushfires, where 400 homes and four lives were lost in January 2003. In 2003, he was posted to Los Angeles as one of the Nine Network's US correspondents.

In 2006 Stefanovic participated in the Channel 9 reality-tv show Torvill and Dean's Dancing on Ice. He eventually made it to the Grand Final of the show but was beaten by Jake Wall on a viewer SMS and phone poll. Stefanovic replaced long running Today host Steve Liebmann in 2005 and currently co-hosts the program with Lisa Wilkinson. Stefanovic is also the fill-in host on A Current Affair if Tracy Grimshaw is absent.
