Bulloch County is a county located in the U.S. state of Georgia. It was created on February 8, 1796. As of 2000, the population was 55,983. The 2005 Census Estimate shows a population of 61,457 [1]. The county seat is Statesboro6. It is named after Archibald Bulloch, a South Carolina native who served as Provincial Governor of Georgia.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,784 km² (689 mi²). 1,767 km² (682 mi²) of it is land and 18 km² (7 mi²) of it (0.98%) is water.

As of the census² of 2000, there were 55,983 people, 20,743 households, and 12,342 families residing in the county. The population density was 32/km² (82/mi²). There were 22,742 housing units at an average density of 13/km² (33/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 68.70% White, 28.76% Black or African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.82% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.80% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. 1.88% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 20,743 households out of which 29.70% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.10% were married couples living together, 11.80% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.50% were non-families. 24.60% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.80% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.08.

In the county the population was spread out with 22.30% under the age of 18, 26.20% from 18 to 24, 24.80% from 25 to 44, 17.40% from 45 to 64, and 9.30% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 26 years. For every 100 females there were 94.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $29,499, and the median income for a family was $42,199. Males had a median income of $30,899 versus $22,479 for females. The per capita income for the county was $16,080. About 11.90% of families and 24.50% of the population were below the poverty line, including 20.60% of those under age 18 and 18.60% of those age 65 or over.
