Changing username/Simple
This page is a forum in which users can request, and global renamers (including stewards) can consider and carry out, requests to rename accounts to usernames that are not yet taken on any Wikimedia project. While global renamers carry out renames, other users (including bots) help by "clerking" the mechanics of this process. If you wish to help as a clerk, please read the linked page carefully.

Instructions
For help 'vanishing' from Wikipedia,
please see courtesy vanishing.

Once you have decided on the name you would like:

  1. Read this page first. You must be aware of, and understand, all of that information before requesting a username change
  2. Check to make sure this username is not already in use. Do this by searching for the name here. If the name appears in the results, even if on another Wikimedia project, it is taken.
  3. Do not create an account under the new name or move/redirect your userpages. We'll do that for you.
  4. Log in with your present username in order to place your request. Renames will not be approved if the requester is not logged in.
  5. Click here to place your request.
    • Add your desired username after NEW=
    • Add a reason for the change after REASON=
    • Do not change anything after CURRENT=
  6. Make sure that you have spelt your desired name correctly, including capitalization and spacing. Save the page. If your request is submitted malformed, please remedy it according to this page.
  7. Check back on this page periodically to answer any questions that may arise regarding your request. Please be patient. It may take a few days for your request to be completed. If you do not answer any questions, your request may be declined due to no response.
  8. Once your request has been completed, please do not remove or change your request. It will be archived automatically by a bot.
  • Requests that do not adhere to these instructions or that are grossly malformed are subject to removal.

Important Notes After you are renamed...
  • Due to technical limitations, usernames may not start with a lowercase letter. However, you may use the template {{lowercase title}} on your user and user talk pages, and change your signature to reflect your preference.
  • Underscores and spaces are considered identical by the MediaWiki software.
  • Use of a company, organization, group, website, or product name as a username is prohibited by the username policy.
  • Please understand the implications of using your real name before requesting a name change to it.
  • ... your name will be changed to the new one in the page history of every page you've edited.
  • ... your userpage and any subpages will be moved to the new name automatically. Please do not attempt to move them yourself.
  • ... links left by your previous signatures will still point to the old userpage; however, a redirect will be left behind to your new userpage.
  • ... your request will be automatically moved to the archives in the interest of transparency.

Current requests

Add new requests to the bottom of the page.

Jenpeng → Penjenbo

Bureaucrat note: You were asked to change your name as your name (and edits) seem to imply that you are editing on behalf of Penguin Books. You are not allowed to edit on behalf of your employer due to our conflict of interest policy. I don't think that changing your name to something still with "pen" in alters that fact, or is much better than your current name. Secretlondon 17:52, 21 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Left a note on talk page as editor has been editing still using the COI username. Secretlondon 17:55, 24 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sn42sTn → 97Tq35

Bureaucrat note: This is your problem? Both edits came from your account - someone obviously used your account when you weren't looking - were you using a shared computer? Secretlondon 13:46, 23 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

WilsonjrWikipedia → Wilsonjr

Clerk note: The requested username is already registered; see Special:CentralAuth. However, as this requested account has made no edits, it meets the criteria for being usurped; if you are an established user and wish to usurp it, please read and follow the process at m:Steward requests/Username changes. If you do not wish to usurp the username, please choose another name to be renamed to. I can't see anything problematic about the username User:WilsonjrWikipedia though - no official role is implied by this username.... WjBscribe 00:33, 23 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Bureaucrat note: Your current username is fine as far as I am concerned. The username policy is against names that "imply the user is an administrator or official figure on Wikipedia, or of the Wikimedia Foundation" or "Usernames that confusingly refer to a Wikipedia process, namespace, or toolbar item". Names just mentioning wikipedia do neither. Secretlondon 14:09, 23 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Secretlondon. You can keep it if you like. --Deskana (talk) 10:47, 26 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'd still like it changed, if possible. It's just unnecessary for it to say "wikipedia." - WilsonjrWikipedia (talk) 00:50, 27 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
OK, then you need to request the rename at WP:CHU/U as that name is already taken but can be "usurped" as it has no edits. WjBscribe 16:36, 27 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Not done User requesting usurption. Secretlondon 01:06, 28 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nintenman → Nicholaslong20226

Bureaucrat note: Could you give us a reason? Thanks. Secretlondon 14:24, 23 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
 Not done --Deskana (talk) 00:30, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Phowarthlees → Plumbly

Bureaucrat note: Could you give us a reason? Secretlondon 14:27, 23 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
 Not done --Deskana (talk) 00:30, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Cynrin → A Softer Answer

A change in user name will only stop the harrassment if my old user page and user talk page would NOT link to the new user page. If there is a link, the vandal could just memorize my new user name and continue the non-stop harrassment. If there is no way to change my user name without linking my old user page to my new, then there is no reason to change names and I will just abandon the user name 'Cynrin'. Cynrin 19:46, 27 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
There is a way. Just request that the redirects to your new name be deleted. The administrators will be happy to oblige. -Jéské (v^_^v Kacheek!) 23:55, 27 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Bureaucrat note: If they care that much they can find you in the logs, or in the archive for this page. There is no way to not record a rename. Secretlondon 01:12, 28 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This vandal does not seem to know enough about Wikipeida to investigate. I've added more about this point on User:Cynrin/Troll. Cynrin 01:20, 28 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Please put a note on your userpage indicating the rename. Since the person vandalising the page will never reach that page since you say they can't figure it out, there's no security problem from doing so. --Deskana (talk) 00:33, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Pills4 → 415

Bureaucrat note: I'm rather reluctant to rename people to numbers given how easily they could be confused with other users editing using similar numbers. --Deskana (talk) 00:32, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The probability of that happening should be rather low, considering that the username is displayed as a hyperlink everywhere, and would thereby link only to one page. Pills4(talk) 29 September 2007 (UTC)
You seem to be missing the point of what I'm saying. For example, were someone to register another similar name such as 41 (talk · contribs), you could be very easily confused. I'd rather you chose a different name. --Deskana (talk) 00:34, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ah well, alright. Can it be changed to Fourth Clone (talk · contribs)? --Pills4 (talk) 02:59, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Mastervargas → Mvgs

Clerk note: The requested username is already registered; see Special:CentralAuth. Please choose another name which is not already in use. WjBscribe 16:30, 27 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
 Not done --Deskana (talk) 00:33, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Zerorules677 → ThinkBlue

Not done They need to apply themselves, you can't apply for them. Moving your userpages and changing your signature doesn't rename you. Secretlondon 01:25, 28 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

UrosAbaz → Uros Abaz

Note. Moved from WP:CHU/U [1] as target not taken. — i said 22:25, 27 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Not done. You seem to just be here to promote yourself? That's not good grounds for a rename I'm afraid. --Deskana (talk) 00:35, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Al pereira → Al Pereira

 Done --Deskana (talk) 00:37, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Jonathantriff → Jonathan Triff

 Done --Deskana (talk) 00:37, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

619.236.20e → RuigAonwiki

 Done --Deskana (talk) 00:37, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Crossfire Youth → Eurc

Not done. You only have one edit. Please just register the new account. --Deskana (talk) 00:37, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

LawScribe → Applet

 Clerk note: A Few Problems:
  1. You have only made two edits, can't you just create a new account
  2. The username you have chosen is already in use and can not be usurped
  3. You did not login to make this request. --Chris  G  11:33, 28 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
 Not done --Deskana (talk) 00:39, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Deadriene16 → Venom251

Bureaucrat note: We have Venom2615 (talk · contribs) who has edited recently. Please consider another username. --Deskana (talk) 00:39, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

AmazonConservationAssociation → Amazon Conservation Association

 Not done --Deskana (talk) 00:39, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Intelliguy → MikeM2010

Eltaf → Tiroma

Please describe these issues briefly? I googled Eltaf and found very little indicative of a privacy issue. --Deskana (talk) 00:41, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thegoldenageoftheflyingspaghettimonster → Fsm2007

Wouldn't any name involving the Flying spaghetti monster fall under the fifth type of disallowed username per WP:U? -Jéské (v^_^v Kacheek!) 20:57, 28 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
"Fsm" isn't blatantly related to anything, you only recognise it as a reference to the flying spaghetti monster because of the extra context here. Certainly as nothing but initials, I'm not sure how it could be considered offensive as you suggest. SamBC(talk) 21:09, 28 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I suppose I am reading too much into it, then... my apologies. -Jéské (v^_^v Kacheek!) 21:21, 28 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
 Clerk note: Please note the user is a suspected sock. Jonathan t - c 19:31, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Question: has anyone actually presented any evidence for this, or did they just stick the tag on the userpage and leave it at that? SamBC(talk) 19:49, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I left a query at the tagger's talk page asking for evidence and notes here.Rlevse 21:16, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
When editing under the alias of User:72.179.61.56, Hkelkar made this edit [2]. After the ip was blocked by checkuser, Thegoldenageoftheflyingspaghettimonster starts making the same edits [3], [4], [5], [6]. To make matters worse the sources he used do not validate the claims that he is trying to state. Also other articles that he has edited, such as National Development Front and Communalism (South Asia) have been also edited by Hkelkar and his many socks.IP198 02:53, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
