Welcome to Dead House is the first book in R.L. Stine's Goosebumps series.
Plot
The town of Dark Falls holds a mysterious secret: those who live there have been transformed into the undead, who require fresh blood to sustain life. As such, they lure new families into the neighborhood, always to the same house: the "Dead House." Upon sending the undead townspeople back to their graves, Amanda and Josh rescue their parents and leave Dark Falls. However, it is implied that there are more members of the undead who eluded them, leaving the story open to a sequel.
This book was probably inspired by 1973's House of the Living Dead.
Characters
Amanda Benson - She, with her family, move to a place called Dark Falls. She is freaked out by the fact that there appears to be no one in the town except them. She also stated that the town is dead because of its emptiness and its darkness. She is patient and, as stated by her parents, has wild imagination.
Josh - her brother, he is stubborn and impatient.
Mr. and Mrs. Benson - The parents of Josh and Amanda. They have received a letter indicating that they have inherited a house. They often fight about nonsense things, such as if the bacon was too crispy.
Compton Dawes - A man from their local real estate office is the one who is in charge of Dark Falls. He is also the one sending letters to families indicating that they have inherited a house. He is one of the few who seek fresh blood. He is the only Compton in his family.
Petey- Josh and Amanda's little dog who runs away then dies and is never seen again.
Ray Thurston - He is the so-called watcher for Mr. Dawes. His job is to never let Amanda and Josh to find out about the truth; they want to kill their family for the next "blood harvesting." He is later killed by Josh via the use of a halogen flashlight.
The other dead kids - including George Carpenter, Karen Somerset, etc.
Sequel
A sequel, titled Happy Holidays From Dead House, was published as the second book of the Goosebumps Gold series.
Television adaptation
The novel was adapted into an episode of the Goosebumps television series. The only difference is that the residents of Dark Falls became zombies after a chemical plant accident released noxious fumes into the air and poisoned the townspeople.
