:They refer to white people as crackers in many of their songs, but I don't believe they are racist and I doubt there are any reliable sources stating they are racist. Cracker is a slang word used to refer to those of European ancestry, which is thought to have either derived from the sound of a whip being cracked by slave owners. Although this term may be disrespectful to whites, it is not a heated racist term like nigger or jap. I believe they are using the term to refer to white people as the oppressors of blacks and the poor--not to show that blacks are superior to whites. —Christopher Mann McKay<small>talk</small> 14:33, 7 November 2007 (UTC) |

Its not about being superior or not. Its that in their lyrics they continuously threaten violence against said crackers. Racism is more than just believing you are superior to someone else. I believe their lyrics can be percieved as racist (in fact I know many people believe so) whether they intend it that way or not. Soledad Brothers link
I assume this is refering to George Jackson/Black Panthers. If not, it may need changed to Soledad Brothers (Band). Neilgg42 01:51, 15 June 2007 (UTC)
correct grammar
Whenever dead prez is at the begining of a sentence, the first letter of the name should be capitalized because it is the begining of a sentence.--Jeffhardywhyx 21:58, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
Dead Prez are...
"Dead Prez is..." is correct, because Dead Prez is singular. Tim Ivorson 17:27, 17 Nov 2004 (UTC)
dead prez
they spell their name with no capitilaztion
- Doesn't seem to be true: see their official Sony webpage. --zenohockey 21:07, 16 May 2006 (UTC)
- It's true... even look at the intro --Sam 05:52, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
This needs to be rewritten
It's not up to the standards of wikipedia's other articles.
Discography
A discography is pretty standard for band pages it would be good to get one in here. Zigbigadoorlue 00:49, 14 March 2006 (UTC)
It really does need to be flagged for cleanup
The Dead Prez article is in no way encyclopedaeic. Come on...
Prone to vandalism.
Additions?
According to MTV.com, DeadPrez worked with Big Pun on his album Capital Punishment. Read the DeadPrez section on MTV.com for more information. Should this be added into the article?
Also HipHopCanada.com interviewed Sticman and there's some information regarding him getting gout, having a 4-year old son name Itwela and they were actually questioned regarding the first paragraph of this article:
- HHC: I am going to quote you something I read on the net. "Dead Prez is known largely for their hard-hitting style and politically-aware lyrics, focusing on racism, critical pedagogy, activism against governmental hypocrisy, and corporate control over the media, especially hip-hop record labels" At the end of the day... what's the main point that you want to get across?
- Sticman: Power. All that extra shit is just jargon.
- HHC: Power for what?
- Sticman: Power over every aspect of our lives, because when you don't have control over your own shit, you're being exploited by somebody else. We want to show that in the music game and every other aspect of life. We formed a company called "Bossup Inc", which is basically another stage in Dead Prez. There are too many conscious groups that are starving and too many, what people would call them, backwards groups, that are rich. Then people think we're talking about capitalism. People try to put us in a box like we're anti-money or something, but I would be foolish in 2006 to be anti-money. What we're anti is, being broke.
Read the rest of the interview on this site. I think it would be better to expand this article using the information. Anyone interested? Comments? Taus33 04:29, 29 May 2006 (UTC)
Stic.man or Sticman?
What's the correct way of spelling the name? MTV.com spelled it without the period as "Sticman", but I've seen other websites spell it using the period as "Stic.man". So, which method is the correct way to spell it or are both correct? An encyclopedic article should take note of this. Taus33 04:32, 29 May 2006 (UTC)
- On the offical site they spell it stic.man (aka Stic), so I guess that's the right spelling. I'll change it right away. Olof Johansson 20:00, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
Hell Yeah
The track "hell yeah" is not supposed to be literal -- any more than "i have a dream, too" means they really kill cops. my interpretation is, they're saying that in order for black people in the US to advance legal niceties cannot be observed -- for they are the legal niceties that are holding people down. i don;t know if anyone can work this into the article -- it needs to be stressed that what might appear to be elements of plain shallow gansta rap are not so one-dimensional.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.122.75.184 (talk • contribs)

- so what does that mean? "legal niceties" are "holding people down" and "cannot be observed"? That sounds very much like their message *is* literal. You think the pizza delivery guy who the animals in the song are going to rob (and probably kill) has "more than $2 or $3 to his name"? This kind of crap is a poison. Yeah. Its not literal. Its just hour upon hour of "kill the cops" "rob for what you deserve" "take what you need". And the rationalization is "you've been opressed so whatever you do isnt your fault". This crap isnt literal? Well who is explaining that to the legions of impressionable young kids who hear this message and take it as a validation that there is no hope, no point in trying, no chance of succeeding? What the hell happened to leaders who tried to UPLIFT young kids and ENCOURAGE them to rise above the bullshit? Now its all "kill" "rob" "steal" "kill" "burn" and then "oh, thats not literal" while these assholes make millions. Im not buying it... Sorry. If any rationalizations about this crap is going to be done in the article, then lets open up a nice "criticism" section.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Mlambert890 (talk • contribs)
- I think the term 'revolutionary' means "legal niceties cannot be observed". Very literally.
- I will also point out that revolutions do actually seem hopeful and encouraging to some people. But why let thinking about someone else's point of view stop you boring people to death with nineteen-fifties youth-gone-wild diatribes? Don't you have a PMRC meeting to go to instead of sitting at your PC? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 59.167.104.123 (talk • contribs)
I agree with Mlambert890. It seems like old skool hip hoppers said "stick it to the man" but Dead Prez thought they said "stick it to the pizza man". What the hell is so "revolutionary" or even "gangsta" about that? I broadly agree with what a lot of DP say, but this song shows a bunch of ways to "get payed" that, far from being ways to "pimp the system", will actually result in the perpetrators being arrested, or simply won't work. The only truly accurate parts of that song are them all being nicked at the end, and the possibility that you can sometimes blag welfare workers. The rest of it is pretty much fantasy 62.6.180.130 13:00, 17 April 2007 (UTC)
