Kate Bornstein is a transgender author, playwright, performance artist and gender theorist.

Bornstein, born Albert Bornstein on March 15, 1948, underwent sex reassignment surgery in 1986. She jokingly refers to her SRS as her 'pussycat surgery'.

Bornstein is currently (2006) writing an autobiography^[1] and resides with her partner, Barbara Carrellas, in New York City^[2]. Bornstein was raised a Modern Orthodox Jew. She still considers herself Jewish but does not practice any form of Judaism. In her book 'Hello Cruel World', Bornstein admits to cutting herself with a knife to express her moods. When she is happy she cuts herself. Sorrow makes her cut herself. Some psychologists question Bornstein being a good source to write a book for teens when she advocates such destructive behavior using knives.
