What this page is (and what this page isn't):

A few Wikipedians, united by their interest in Square Enix's popular Final Fantasy series of computer role-playing games, pooled their talents to make various suggestions as to how we might best organize data regarding the series. These are only suggestions, a means to provide focus and get prospective editors going, and no one should feel at all obligated to follow them. Beyond that, this project is designed as a place where both veteran and neophyte editors can compare notes, discuss future goals, and address issues of a general scope. In short, because we want you to write articles, we're trying to make it as easy as possible for you to do so!

Title

WikiProject Final Fantasy

Scope

This WikiProject aims to create articles relating to all twelve installments of the Final Fantasy series, as well as spin-off and related titles, and to standardize the content and format of data in those articles. In addition, this WikiProject aims to provide some degree of damage control for poorly written or extraneous Final Fantasy articles.

Style guide

See also: Wikipedia:Manual of Style

To keep a consistent style to the articles, these guidelines should be followed.

The article name, when first mentioned, should be bold. Game names and album titles should be italicized (as well as bolded when it comes to the first mention), and song titles should be placed in "double quotes".

In general, abbreviations or other shorthand should be avoided: when referring to Final Fantasy V, spell out the full title of the game, don't abbreviate it as FFV or FF5. The same goes for role-playing game. Even though most editors will likely understand what you mean, Wikipedia is a general interest encyclopedia, and the casual user may not be familiar enough with gaming terminology to make sense of what many of us take for granted.

Naming conventions should follow the official English language localizations of the series, where available: Tina should be referred to as Terra, Mash should be referred to as Sabin, etc. The one exception is in the titles of pre-Final Fantasy VII localizations: to prevent confusion between Final Fantasy II and Final Fantasy IV, and Final Fantasy III and Final Fantasy VI, the titles should be referred to by their original Japanese name. In general, new localizations supersede older localizations: it is valid to refer to the item Phoenix Down from Final Fantasy VI (as per the PlayStation rerelease) as opposed to the Fenix Down (the original Super Nintendo version). If there are any questions about what to call a specific thing, you should post a note on the article's talk page.

Games in the Final Fantasy series are numbered using Roman numerals, not Arabic numerals. In other words, you should refer to Final Fantasy IX, not Final Fantasy 9.

Articles should be categorized in the correct subcategory of Category:Final Fantasy. Remember, categories are inherited: an article placed in Category:Final Fantasy X characters does not also need to be placed in Category:Final Fantasy X. When you upload a Final Fantasy and related media, you should place it in Category:Final Fantasy media.

What do we include?

The main criteria for inclusion, as it is for Wikipedia as a whole, is notability. Although Wikipedia is not bound by the size constraints of the printed page, too much detailed information can be daunting to the uninitiated, who may not want anything more than a general overview.

That being said, it's not always easy to judge what is notable and what isn't. We're not GameFAQs: we don't need to have detailed statistics for every character and enemy in the series. We also aren't in the business of providing gameplay strategies. Ideally, a good article should consist of at least two paragraphs of essential information. Anything less than that should probably be included within a larger article or list.
