Summerville High School is a public high school located in Summerville, South Carolina. It is one of the largest high schools in the state.

History

In 1924, a brick building on Main Street, which is now Rollings Middle School of the Arts, was the only high school in the Summerville area. As Summerville’s population increased rapidly in the late 1960s and early 1970s, a larger campus needed. In 1969, the present building on Boone Hill Road was opened to students. From the first day of classes, the new facility was too small. Because of the unexpectedly high enrollment, several mobile units were set up on the campus.

In 1970, Summerville High School and Alston High School, the district’s Black school, were combined to integrate the school district. Attendance continued to increase throughout the 1970s. In 1972, double sessions were used until an additional underclassman campus was completed in 1975. Another classroom wing was created by the spring of 1978.

In 1992, Fort Dorchester High School was opened, splitting the school’s student body. As a result, the Gregg underclassman campus was renovated as a middle school, and the switch to a single campus was completed in 1998. Construction of a fine arts hall and cafeteria expansion was completed in the fall of 2001.

Summerville has long standing rivalries against Wando in marching bands, Stratford in football, and Gaffney in playoff football. But most importantly its greatest rival in Fort Dorchester. These two schools continuously butt heads in any sport, competition, or any extracurricular activity. Fort and Summerville are said to have the second biggest rivalry of all time in the state and the biggest high school rivalry to date. The biggest rivalry consists of Clemson University and The University of South Carolina.

As of 2004, Summerville has a 78.9% graduation rate. However, the school boasts a 97.3% passing rate of the state's standardized exit exam.

Athletics

Football

Summerville's varsity football team is coached by John McKissick. Coach McKissick has been coaching at the school for over 50 years. McKissick won his 500th game as coach of Summerville's team, making him the "winningest" football coach in all of football.
McKissick won his 523rd game on October 26, at the Summerville Homecoming game against Fort Dorchester.

The team has won 10 state championships, and in 2006, remained undefeated in the regular season.

McKissick won his 556th game, defeating Gaffney 23-22 in the third round of the playoffs. In the finals of the 2007 season, the Greenwave suffered a deafeat to Byrnes.

Swimming

The swim team, under former head coach Daniel McDonough, has won 4 state championships. The girls team won in 2000 and 2001, and the boys team won in 2003 and 2004. The team is now coached by David Horton.

Wrestling

The wrestling team is presently coached by Kenny Walker,Daryl Tucker,and Ruben Dainels.Summerville has won 11 state titles,and 3 in the past 4 years. they were once ranked in the top 15 nationally,and top 3 in the SouthEast. Now they are presently ranked 7th in the Southeast this year the team is so unstoppable that they say they suck RODS on the mats

Marching Band

The Summerville Competitive Performance Ensemble has won 12 state championships under Gus Moody, Marty Lyles, and Leslie Gilreath, most recently in 2004 with its show Faces: Elements of Expression. The band is under the direction of Leslie Gilreath with assistance from Sue Alexander, Susan Bocook, and Mike Greer. In 2005, the ensemble was named lower state champion for its performance of Kaleidoscope. In 2006, it was ranked third in South Carolina for its show Vertigo. The band also placed tenth out of 52 at the Bands of America Super Regional competition, allowing it to attend the 2006 Grand Nationals. At the Bands of America Grand Nationals, the CPE placed thirtieth of 92 bands. Summerville Greenwave Marching Band also went to state in 2007 where they placed 2nd, right behind Wando High School.

• Spike, 2006, noted for being awesome. Once received a death threat from Michael Conroy.
