Uploading Album Cover

I want to upload an album cover but I didn't realise it would be so difficult. By which I mean permission/copyright etc. I have looked at the help pages but to be honest I can't make head nor tail of them. Can anyone tell me

a) If I can upload covers I obtain from cover websites/scanned myself

b) exactly how to go about this and what to enter in the boxes presented for uploading.

Thank you Redxx (talk) 20:06, 3 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Red, agreed it can be confusing. Believe it or not, it's been simplified GREATLY from the last time I've uploaded images. To answer your questions:
a) Absolutely! Either method is fine and encouraged to help enhance articles.
b) This is usually the best procedure:
  1. Scan the image or download the file from another website onto your computer.
  2. Click Upload file in your toolbox to the left.
  3. Follow the directions there, clicking "cover of an album or single" and then the appropriate link for where you plan to display the picture, (I assume you're going for an infobox use).
  4. Of course you'll read all the text on the final upload page (right!), but really it contains a lot of useful information to help streamline things.
  5. Fill in the source filename (the file name on your computer), destination filename (what it will be named in wikipedia), and pull down the license (in this case, Non-free Album cover)
  6. The most important section is probably the summary. You are required to put the name of the wikipedia article where you are going to display the picture after the words "|Article=" in the summary. Fill out as many of the other fields as you can, but nothing else is really required
  7. Hit Upload File
  8. Display the image in the wikipedia article by typing [[Image:destination_filename]] where you'd like it. See Help:Image for more information on image formatting.

Welcome, and a note about "preview"

Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. In the future, it is recommended that you use the preview button before you save; this helps you find any errors you have made, and prevents clogging up recent changes and the page history. Thank you. --Paul Erik (talk)(contribs) 15:43, 19 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Noted...Apologies..I only started contributing to this yesterday and am still learning, but some things don't seem to allow you to preview them before changing and this is why I saved (and subsequently re-edited). I would appreciate your comments back on this. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Redxx (talkcontribs) 15:56, 19 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
