Willis Thomas Wilson, Jr. (born March 22, 1960 in Indianapolis, Indiana) was head coach of the college basketball team at Rice University for 16 seasons. He is both the winningest (219 wins)and losingest coach (246 losses) in school history.
Similar to the nickname of basketball coaching legend John Wooden ("The Wizard of Westwood"), Willis is nicknamed "The Wizard of West U" ("West U" referring to West University Place, a city adjacent to Rice University). [1]
Wilson is a two-time winner of the Fashionable 4, which awards a bobble-head doll to the coach it deems to be the best dressed in Division I college basketball. He won for the first time in 2002 and won his second title in 2007. He is also the only coach to reach the Fashionable 4 all 10 years of its existence. [2] [3]
After a 3-27 record in 2007-2008, Wilson was "not retained" (fired!) March 14, 2008.[4][5]
