Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit (ドラゴンボールZ バーストリミット, DoragonbōruZetto Bāsuto Rimitto) is a video game based on the anime/manga series Dragon Ball Z and is being released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles, making it the first video game from the Dragon Ball franchise for next generation consoles. It was announced in Shonen Jump magazine on December 12, 2007. The developer for the game is Namco Bandai[4].

Story

The game is confirmed to have a story mode, spanning from the beginning of the Saiyan Saga to the end of the Cell Saga, but in the new video[5], Ryu Mito from Dimps said that they may include later saga or plots revolving around the movies. There are also going to be what if scenarios, much like some of the previous games.

Gameplay

On December 24, 2007, a promotional video trailer was released. The gameplay shown in the video showcases moves much like those of the Dragon Ball Z Budokai game series, and those of Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai , demonstrating that the gameplay will be 2D, unlike the Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi game series which used an over the shoulder camera perspective. At the Taipei Game Show 2008, the game was shown to utilize in-fight cutscenes in an effort to make the game as true to the anime as possible. One such example is a character being attacked with an energy beam, only for the game to switch to a 3D rendered cutscene depicting the character knocking away this attack in defense, then quickly switching back to the continuing 2D gameplay. [6]. The method for using such abilities is currently unknown. Support characters are also usable, with Krillin being the first known example. In-game transformations have also been displayed, with Goku being able to power up to Kaiô-ken while fighting. [7]. Players can also knock their opponents into different sky areas depending on the stage, which is also initiated by the in-game cut-scenes.

The game will also utilize the Playstation 3 and the Xbox 360's online functions to battle friends and enemies alike across an internet connection[8], and can play against those with a copy of the game in all region formats.[9]

Confirmed Characters

Playable characters have been confirmed before the release through various scans and game trailers. The February 2008 edition of the Japanese magazine, V Jump has announced 35 playable characters as well as 13 stages. However, a recent IGN interview with Donny Clay decreases this number to only 21 characters and just 5 stages. As of today, if this was an error, he has not been corrected so thats the official number as of now. Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit Details

Developement

In an interview with Gamespot, Donny Clay announced that there is not any downloadable content planned as of now for either version of the game.

Donny Clay also announced in an IGN interview that because this is their first game on the PS3 and 360 consoles (and they are still relatively new to the technology involved in developing for the systems), they would keep online functionality simple, providing pure 1 v 1 fighting and leader board rankings.

A second and third American trailer were recently leaked prematurely on video sites such as YouTube which has confirmed Broly and Bardock to be playable characters, as well as confirming that Frieza will have his Mecha Form. Also judging from the leaked trailers there is a great chance that Burst Limit will include music from the anime for the first time ever.
