Whitney Dean is a fictional character in the BBC One soap opera EastEnders. She is played by Shona McGarty. [1]
She is part of Bianca Jackson's family, the fifteen-year-old daughter of Bianca's previous partner, Nathan Dean, who died in a road accident in 2003.[1]
She is described as "a teenage drama queen, unable to engage brain before mouth and constantly finding herself in and out of trouble."[1] Bianca sees Whitney as one of her own, and also as "a friend and confidante".[1]
Background
Whitney was the daughter of Nathan Dean and stepdaughter of Bianca Jackson. Her father died in a tragic road accident in 2003 when she was just 10-years-old and Bianca was heavily pregnant with their child. Bianca took Whitney in and raised her as her own child and months later gave birth to a daughter Tiffany Dean.
Arrival
Whitney made her first appearance on 1 April 2008, when her and her family were being thrown out of the house they were staying in by their landlord. Despite Bianca's desperate attemps to persuade the landlord to reconsider, he did not, and the whole family were forced to sleep in a bus shelter after they couldn't find anywhere else. The next morning, Whitney woke to find two police officers wondering what they were doing. Bianca told the police that they had missed the bus, and wouldn't be able to make it home in time. She was backed up by Whitney.
However, later that day, the same police officers noticed Whitney in the park with her siblings after Bianca had gone to try and find a place for them to stay. The police questioned Whitney, but she told them to leave her and her family alone. Bianca returned to see the police interfering, and hit one of the officers. Her kids, including Whitney were taken away, and Bianca was arrested, but was later released. Bianca then became distressed as she thought she had lost her kids. In a desperate bid to get her family back, she eventually gave an adress to social services, that being Pat Evans's house. Bianca eventually got her kids back, and they all went to stay with Pat.
Whitney was feeling hurt and angry at how Bianca had treated them, and refused to talk to her for a while. Bianca kept apologising prefusely, but the more she tried to patch things up with Whitney, the more Whitney ignored her. Bianca then decided to have a party at Dot Branning's house in a bid to try and cheer up the kids. Everyone wanted to go, except Whitney, she told her half-sister Tiffany that she didn't have a top to wear. Tiffany then went and stole a top from Stacey Branning's stall. Whitney was furious when she found out, and told Tiffany that if anyone found out, they might go back into care. Whitney went to return the top, telling Stacey she had bought it earlier, but it hadn't fit therefore wanted her money back. Stacey knew she hadn't sold that top. Whitney tried to run, but Stacey dragged her back to Bianca's. Bianca and Whitney finally patched things up, and Whitney went to the party.
On 2 May, Whitney attempted to steal from Stacey's stall again, but was caught by Mo Harris. Whitney attempted to escape, but Tamwar Masood stopped her. Whitney then tried to blame Ricky Butcher, making it look as though it was his fault. Whitney blackmailed Ricky in order to get £20 for a new top. However, Ricky saw right through her, and refused to do so.
Whitney was getting annoyed with Tiffany as she was constantly asking if she could have Gus Smith's dog Wellard. Gus had left Wellard with Mickey Miller, after he had left the square. Mickey however, wasn't really keen on having Wellard and therefore decided to sell him. Tiffany told Whitney that she loved Wellard and really wanted him. Whitney eventually gave in, and told Mickey that Wellard was her uncle Robbie Jackson's dog. She pretended to cry in a bid to get Mickey to give the dog to her for free. MIckey however, didn't fall for Whitney's tricks and he sold the dog to Vinnie Monks. Whitney told Vinnie that her sister loved Wellard, and really wanted him. Vinnie was sympathetic and gave Whitney Wellard in return for Pat's pineapple ornament.
