Having been told to leave by Dawn, May later infiltrated the Miller's home, knocked out Mickey with a crowbar, and pursued Dawn into one of the upstairs bedrooms. Having unsucessfully tried to keep May out of the bedroom, Dawn tried to get the key to unlock the door and though she succeeded, she tore the ligaments in her foot trying to escape. An emotionally drained May returned downstairs and opened the music box she sent to Summer. While listening to its song, she lit a cigarette, causing an explosion as the gas cooker was left on. It is currently unknown whether May purposely turned the cooker on, or if it was left on from when Mickey baked Summer's birthday cake, or what was supposed to be a cake.

May Wright is a fictional character in the popular BBC soap opera EastEnders. She is played by Amanda Drew, and made her debut on 25 September 2006. She first left the show on 25 June 2007 but returned on 6 June 2008.

Development

May's personality has earned her the nickname "Mad May" from the media.[1] Drew has described the role as "a gift of a role for any actor because of her complexity."[2] Of her return to EastEnders, she has stated: "I'm so excited to be playing her again. It'd be a shame to give too much away, but she has changed in many ways."[2] Executive producer Diederick Santer has said: "It's great to have Amanda back. May is a hugely popular character. I'm sure viewers will be keen to see what she gets up to and how she's changed."[2]

Storylines

In September 2006, May replaced Dr. Oliver Cousins as General Practitioner for Walford. Several weeks later, she was revealed to be the wife of Rob Minter, an already established character who had been having an affair with Dawn Swann. May and Rob had been on a trial separation when he met Dawn, but had since got back together and started trying for a baby through IVF. May revealed that she had previously lost a baby six weeks into her pregnancy. Her own fertility treatment had been unsuccessful, meaning that she was unlikely to ever conceive again. After discovering that Dawn was pregnant, May asked Dawn to sell the baby to her and Rob, before having Rob con Dawn by claiming to love her, and express desire to leave May in order to raise the baby with Dawn. Meanwhile as May's behaviour became increasingly erratic, it became clear that the doctor was losing her mind.

Eventually Rob ended his relationship with May for real when her scheming ways and neurotic behaviour proved too much for him to handle. He then told her he was filing for divorce. May took revenge on Rob by getting him fired. May then began taking pills intended for her patients, but when challenged over her theft by Naomi Julien, managed to turn the tables on the nurse by accusing her of stealing the pills herself, forcing her out of the Square.

After several failed attempts, May successfully managed to seduce Rob and they got back together. To continue to lull Dawn into a false sense of security, Rob proposed to her and she accepted. He took her away to stay in his parents' house, but when they arrived, May was waiting for them. She had Rob restrain Dawn while she drugged her with sedatives and threatened to perform a forced caeserean if Dawn failed to co-operate. However, Dawn fought back, incapacitated Rob and stabbed May in the arm with a scalpel before stealing her keys and gaining access to her car. As Dawn drove off, May ran after her screaming "I WANT MY BABY!" in an hysterical manner. Dawn managed to escape back to Walford.

When Dawn went into labour and delivered her baby, Summer, May conned her way into the hospital and attempted to go through with purchasing the child from her - doubling her offer of £10,000 but Dawn turned the insane doctor away. She later arrived at Dawn's home after she had discharged herself from hospital, apologising for everything to had done, asking to say goodbye to baby Summer and offering the toys and baby clothes she had amassed during Dawn's pregnancy. Prior to May's arrival, Dawn had called the police who arrived during the delay created by allowing May to see the baby. May was subsequently aprehended. Before being taken away May bitterly told Dawn that she could have given Summer "twice the life" Dawn and the Millers could.

May returned on 6 June 2008, hiring Dawn's fiancé Jase Dyer to decorate her new home. She called herself Jenny, and tried to get Jase to bring Summer to work with him. She was later seen drinking vodka and clutching a teddy bear she had intended to give to Summer before she was arrested. On 11 June, May arrived in Albert Square and was almost seen by both Denise Wicks and Mickey Miller. After getting upset as she glanced over to her former surgery and home, May was comforted by Lucas Johnson. However after seeing Dawn leave the Miller household with Jase's son Jay Brown she dismissed Lucas and went over to the house, hoping that Jase would be in alone with Summer. She brought a birthday present with her. After Jase let her in she sat next to Summer and after trying to say goodbye to her in private, she found herself looking after her as Jay was busy. During this time she gazed around the house and was disgusted by the mess of it. When she heard Dawn come through the front door, May said her goodbyes to Summer and sneaked out the back door. As she went to her car she met Lucas again and happily told him that she was relocating to Walford.

May was then spotted by Jane Beale back in Albert Square on Summer's first birthday. Worried about her friend, Jane invited her for a coffee to find what she was up to. May revealed that she wanted to see Summer as it was her birthday, but a concerned Jane falsely told her that the Miller family were out for the day. Noticing what Jane was up to, May left her and made her way to Dawn's house. Dawn had just arrived home in tears having had an argument with Jase over postponing the wedding when May knocked at the door. Believing it to be Jase, Dawn angrily made her way to the front door and flung it open then gasped in horror at the sight of May who merely smiled calmly.

May snatched Summer away from Dawn and she, unable to reclaim her because of her injuries, made an excuse to bide time. An injured Mickey rushed into the room and pulled May out of the room, but later collapsed because of his sustained injury to the head.

Seeing of how close May was to the center of the explosion it is likely to assume that may was killed instantly from the blast.
